"project doom" has begun

well i know i’d be better off with a diff block but what i meant was would i be better off buying the stock oem cast pistons (10:1) and shaving the heads a bit vs buying afftermarket ones (9.5:1) from somewhere like summit…and getting the stock cam vs an aftermarket cam.

that compression is really what kills it, def doing a set of pistons and a mild head shave will really bring some of it back.

compression and cam isn’t going to do you one bit of good with stock heads and intake. I’d look into getting the heads ported, an aluminum intake and 750 DP holley first. Maybe that and the oe 10:1’s. Like said b/f, it needs to breath to make power.

you found heads at summit for a Buick?? go with stock heads or if you do buy heads get them from T/A. basically if you want more power stock parts aren’t gonna get you there. you deffiently need to go bigger cam, probably a holley 800 double pumper carb, a performance HEI ignition, 2 1/2 exhaust, 2 chamber mufflers or open dump, bigger valves, valve springs, high stall converter, ported exh manifolds or headers, performer intake, 3:42 gears

that’s why i said we left the intake with quick, i was looking at the aluminum one that edelbrock makes, it’s not that expensive ($230) or a couple other ones around, the carb was never with the motor so it’s obv gonna be somethign we’ll be getting (jim said he’s got a few layin around) and the heads will be ported and a 3 angle valve job on the stock valves more than likely (i priced oversized ones but a little pricey)

actually find some stock heads from a 72-70 car and get them done up.

i know u like to do things on a tight budget but if you wanna do a buick right you gotta spend the dough, my dad and i are busy fixing all the shortcuts my uncle took.

good god… that would seem to take a slightly higher budget then i think the project is worth!

no i meant go with the stock pistons AND shaved heads or aftermarket PISTONS (not heads)

well you can’t make power in an NA engine just by turning up the fuel and boost. If it was a early block it would be much easier. Unlike an SBC you can’t rely on summit for parts for a BBB.

i’ve been looking at the stuff from ta and i think i wanna go with the stock stage 1 cam, the 10:1 cast pistons, and look for an intake/carb setup for it…you’re confusing me building on a budget with me looking at stock parts.

well you answered your own question. you told me the stock pistons were 10:1 and the after market were 9?:1. My car has stock overbore pistons. No brainer, you need compression. I would really realy really suggest dumping those heads thou and gettin earlier heads. i believe my car is 11.5:1

you’re talking overall motor not block at that point, the “blocks” still have the same bore/stroke through the years from what i’m reading it’s the pistons/head/cam that made the BIGGEST difference. at that point the only thing making it “harder” would be i have to buy parts to make it what the earlier one had stock (which is pretty much what i plan on doing)

cutty you’re getting away from the original intent, it was to be fun and put a bb in an s10 not build up a race motor…i get what you’re trying to say but at the same time that’s more than i wanted to even do to a motor, i’ll portmatch the stock heads if the time comes that i don’t like them and i have more money i’ll swap them out

i misunderstood your intent then, go with all stock replacement parts and you should be fine, don’t expect a lot thou just cause its a big block.

here’s what i want to do: a stage 1 cam, 10:1 pistons 30 over, port the heads a bit (shave them too) aluminum intake, decent carb (700cfm+) distributer, coil, port the factory manifolds. sound like a decent setup for now?
