Question on 95 240sx

hey guys. i really need your help
i recently purchased a 95 240sx and i have a question
i failed safety inspection because they said the car starts without the clutch down. is that normal? i know that newer model cars must and need to have the clutch down in order to start the car, but i didn’t think it would be the same case with older vehicles. is the mechanic trying to rip me off?
any info would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance

btw, the mechanic is at canadian tire. i regret going there at first place now :frowning:

I don’t see why that would be an issue … but if it’s Canadian tire, they’re not trying to rip you off, they’re just dumb.

Clutch interlock is a very simple system. Odds are it’s just the clutch switch (under the clutch pedal). It’s like a 50¢ piece.

Just take it somewhere else. I don’t know for sure, but that doesn’t sound like something you’d need for a safety. A lot of cars don’t come with them in the first place.

AFAIK s14s never had them in the first place.

Actually both my s13 and my s14 and most other older manual cars I’ve driven didn’t need the clutch to be pressed to start it.

I also don’t think that has much to do with a safety.

Justin…

go see Trevor @ Bender Motors… ph # 576-2240

Address is 14 Bloomingdale Rd… but it actually is off Bridge St and once you cross the bridge and come to the used car dealer there is a road to the left which is called “bloomingdale rd” well turn RIGHT into the used car dealer (they share the same driveway) and just take it past the dealer and his shop is right on the left side.

Tell him Woodrow sent you

that means that your car used to be automatic and it has been converted to 5 speed.

tell them to stfu and safety the damn car.

afaik, most if not all 240’s can be started without pressing the clutch down. mine can start without it, but i still clutch.

Mine starts without the clutch pressed (S13 though).

my S14 doesnt start unless you push the clutch.

my S13 (which i swapped auto to 5spd on) didnt need the clutch in.

either way this is a pointless debate, go to a different shop and get the cert. end of story lol

Kouki maybe, zenki you don’t need to push the clutch for sure… I’ve driven a bunch and never had to do it.

I was just gonna post that… Zenki = no clutch interlock, kouki = has clutch interlock…

i just called nissan to verify
the lady said that all cars after 1990 came with clutch interlock…?
frankly, i trust most of you guys than her (not because she is a women, but just the fact that you guys have 1000X more experience with our cars)
i dunno what to do anymore :frowning: crap

mine’s a '93 and it has no clutch interlock.

she’s bullshitting you. she probably doesn’t even know what a 240sx is (not 'cause she’s a woman, but 'cause she’s probably n00b). listen to us!

I have never heard of clutch interlock being included in a safety before. My S13 doesn’t have it and I passed. AFAIK clutch interlock was mandatory in the US but not in Canada. The safety probobaly says to make sure the clutch interlock works if present and the tech just didn’t know what he was doing… like the others said go get it safetied somewhere else where more expirienced people work.
Good luck

Ok this is the deal about this problem.

All Canadian 240sx’s did not come with a clutch interlock switch as it is not required in Canada. New models come with it because it is on new models in Japan and the USA.

US models came with a clutch interlock switch since its required by law in the states.

Basicly saying you got ripped off the car never came with the switch in the first place I own a 95 and did the 5 spd swap with parts from a 95 and there was not clutch interlock switch shown I have also driven other s14’s and they dont have this switch in them. Go back and tell them you want your car to pass without futher charge if you want something to go by here is a image from the FSM 1995. This should clear it up for you if you wish I PM me I can send you this page to print out.

That is exactly what I have found as I have had both.
