So im thinking to convert my R1 to fuel injection this winter.
I was talking to a couple other guys who converted 2000-2001 R1’s to fuel injected, they all say it was pretty cheap and easy and was easier than they thought, which is rare to hear when u do something like that.
Here is some parts I been looking at
03 engine head… $199 right now
throttle bodies, going for 75 bucks buy it now i think
head cover w/ cam sensor 50$
new R1 gauge cluster (i think this will be pretty sweet in an old R1) 70$
wiring harness ~50$
Airbox <50$
ECU 100$
Also engine wirigin harness but i’ll look more later, and then thats all, i have some clutch plates i wanna buy but that has nothing to do with this conversion, and then throttle cable and hand controls like blinker, starter, etc etc
thats all tell me what you think i’ll update the thread with more parts, im making it so i can keep track of everything I need to get etc and also wanna see wat anyone thinks
what about computer ? and a few hundred other parts along the way …for the money your gonna put into it for a marginal gain spend it in other places or over the winter ill do it for ya
it comes with the wiring harness of the engine, i just dont have any good pics of it and dont see any good auctions for one yet, but auctions change every day/week so i got time
we’ll see how it goes im gonna get vlads help to do the head etc and might do it in his garage down in schenectady if not then up at my bros/grandmothers garage near LVD
im probably gonna spend like 1500-1700 bucks im guessing but who knows, im just gonna start buying parts as i can afford them and hopefully have it all together by the time it starts snowing
Looks like a fairly straight forward project, just have to source all the parts. For a computer just get a mini case Dell and an I/O card some relays and a 7" LCD, run some Linux distro and call it a day :lol
dude for that kind of money go intenal on the motor keep the carb and be done wit it no retunes or anything after mods just rejeting if the bike was done by the right person it would smoke a f/i bike just sayin dont think is the best route to go wit the bike …some of the fastest and best powered bikes were carb not f/i
yea well its anyone’s opinion, i heard people swear by carbs and then others totally against them liek 99% of people here.
for me, i thought it would/will be a cool custom project to do over the winter, and not another 1 in a million R1’s etc .
Also im a computer guy i think it would be cool to mess with power commander to be honest. my valve(s) are ticking anyways right now due to me being an asshole and never jetting my carbs lol
so yea, i think having an older bike, with fuel injection and power commander would be awesome , because anyone would look over it thinking that "hey thats some carbed thing, its alot slower than new r1’s " etc etc and then for anyone who know the bike would agree “yea thats a cool bike custom conversion etc”
the reason most people on here hate carbs is cause they dont know them it,s easier for a comp to do the tuning but gettin in the carbs is harder so know one cares to learn …the valves arent ticking due to bad jetting it s cause its a yamaha get used to it or run good oil …better yet have someone that knows them service it
i changed the oil after i got it, and the rockers/lifters whatever stopped making noise when it was hot, i used a bit thicker oil, so i know about the yamaha tick your tlaking about
the tick IM talking about is, a new tick just came out a few days ago after racing my R1 all night LOL
and your right about carbs and FI, only difference i heard is that carbs do have one slight downfall and thats smoothly delivering consistent air and fuel throughout the entire power band, and fuel injection is dead on obviously
sure the noise isnt a exhaust leak?or maybe ya need to shim the valves if the valves are loose that will lose perf and untuned carbs :nono ill get it right for ya if ya want
yea like i said, i think its the valves, and they probably need shimming but im not willing to go through that, its nearly the end of the season yano what im sayin?
BUT i will check for the headers to see if they gotten loose or something, but its a hgiher pitched ticketc like stem against lobe tick sound,
to be honest, im not really worried about it, but i wont take the bike out on any grand excursions at this point
if i got the money together/parts together before it snows, best believe its going FI because i just love the idea that i wont see another 01 or older R1 fuel injected !
but i will take your help if i need it when doing the work
