Radar Detectors

no i don’t think that was me…

what difference does it make if all the signals are coming from one place? its a police station man. LOL

haha no but say there’s a speed sign on one side of the road giving you a ka signal, and you know about it, drive by it daily.

now one of these days you drive by it and your rx65 tones out Ka, and you think nothing of it and keep on cruising, but there’s a cop off to the right…v1 not only counts off how many dunique signals there are but points out the one that is the highest threat, being the cop off to the right, and it flashes the arrow in his direction and you know to haul it back down.

It’s all about situation awareness.

^^^ no i actually wouldn’t “think nothing of it.”

i actually drive rather cautiously, radar or not. most people know that the cops do sit near those signs sometimes.

i have said before towards the beginning of this thread that you should still “take heed” even when you have a detector. they are not foolproof.

does the rx65 tell you there’s a second signal though?

pretty sure it kicks to the second almost instantly…

it gives a ton of warning time, i know that much. i can pick most of them up a half mile plus

no i mean say you have two signals, does it like sound a different tone or something when it picks up a second? or it does the same tone twice?

i havent seen like 2 ka’s at once for instance.

usually it’ll blip ka, then k almost instantly when theres more than one from what i’ve seen. like i said, it doesn’t matter, 1 signal means “slow down” to me.

yeah, just wondering

wow i really dont care if it flips out about x band, i dont care if i know where the cop is, if it beeps at me (unless its x) im gonna slow down it doesnt matter where the cop is hes still beaming you but distance does matter quite a bit, anyone know anything about those jamers, laser or radar?

Or a garage door opener or store alarm one day and a garage door opener or store alarm and a cop the next.

Here’s why two detectors should not be tested next to each other:

First Problem: Detectors hate each other - Every superheterodyne receiver—that includes all of today’s radar detectors—receives and transmits during normal operation. As you probably know, these detector signals sometimes set off other detectors. Out on the road, other detectors are the most common nuisance signal V1 has to deal with.

What’s not so obvious is this. Even if a detector isn’t set off by another one, its internal defense system may be affecting its radar sensitivity. This problem compounds when you bring two operating detectors into the same car. Up close, the transmitted signals become much stronger than a normal design would anticipate, and the weak signals that wouldn’t bother at normal distances can send the defense system into hyperdrive.

V1 inspects every signal it receives and decides, Is it really radar? Is it maybe radar? Is it not radar. But it isn’t designed to operate within a few feet of another detector, and we know of no other detector designed for that high-stress condition either.

Here’s the irony: If you put two detectors together and one of them seems sluggish, you might decide that one is inferior. In fact, it may have a superior defense system, and the detector that appears to work better may be a grotesque polluting transmitter.

It’s more trouble to test detectors by powering up one at a time, but it’s the only way to tell which is better at finding radar.

PS: Just like the last time I got new RD, I hooked it up and went for a ride and guess what 25min to my GF’s house 25min back going through Troy (where I see like 3-5 cops every time I go that direction). I didn’t see one cop car…, I wish everyday was like that!

Nice, finally an explanation. We experienced this first hand a few times while on drives, but he was right behind me so idk?

well radar busters, which says the v1, bel rx65, and escort 8500 were the top 3 ranked units, IIRC tested all 3 suction cupped next to each other. pretty sure the dude is a radar expert and retired police officer. don’t know why he would have tested this way, if thats true.

generally garage door openers emit x band. some false k signals can be security systems, those programmable construction signs and such. when i do get a false k alert, (which is pretty rare,) it has a typical reaction to being a “false,” meaning the detector will react much differently in this manner. if you pass something that sets your detector off everyday, its not always a bad thing. at least you know that its working.

the rx 65 has the feature to independently turn the x band to lo sensitivity, or off all together between separate bands. it also has a mute button right on the cord at fingers reach, which has a volume control on it as well. it has a volume reduction feature that you can enable when you get an alert as well. (it’ll get quieter by itself after a few beeps unless the threat gets closer.) if it goes off and it annoys me, i just mute it, without having to reach up.

honestly, for the price and the features i am a proud owner. i have never received a speeding ticket with it in my car, and its been about 2 1/2 years since i bought it.

Passive Jammers are junk and don’t work. Active Jammers are very expensive and are highly illigal.

This sounds like something I should cover in a future issue. :ninja

The laser jammers are perfectly illegal, and quite effective in giving you a few seconds of slow down time.

You got the rest right vladiator

yeah, there are a few things to consider about laser/ radar.

laser:

  • cop needs to be stationary
  • can’t gun you through glass
  • can’t use in poor weather
  • very accurate at telling who’s speeding (direct line of sight)
  • almost instantly screwed when “painted” with it

radar:

  • can be moving to gun
  • works through glass
  • similar performance in adverse weather conditions
  • highly inaccurate (officers judgment call on who’s speeding)
  • bounces off overpasses, other cars, objects, etc

a good jammer can be effective, and since they install hidden, they are very tough to detect. you’d be surprised at how much cheaper they’ve gotten too.

how illegal exactly? and where can you get one?

http://www.radarbusters.com/activeradarjammersarticle.cfm

Not worth it, it’s a federal offense.

would you rather be fined thousands of dollars AND be on federal probation…or pay a few hundred for a good lawyer?

so laser jammer is legal but radar is illegal? hmm maybe i should invest in a really nice radar detector with the laser jammer on it, that’d be legit :mwahaha
