RB20DET Advice and what to do's

3 in ten years actually… and one was built improperly, so really only 2 on their own.

if done properly any engine will be fine, but as mark is experiencing with his rb20, the rb20 ist just riskier for really no signficant benefits. SR is just easier and cheaper to make a reliable 300- 350whp car.

we went through this on nyspeed a few times… guys doing CA’s and RB20’s because they’re rarer… which ends up meaning fewer people finish them, that’s all. And it’s because of all the hassles.

i’m with fobwall here, don’t really care what anyone puts in their car, but i’ve been around for a while and have never ever known someone to keep an RB20 in their car over the long term… too much extra work for not a lot extra pay-off.

i don’t understand what extra work is needed? I really don’t. Maybe if it’s a 25 or a 26.

I dunno. and as for mileage, once the car is tuned, it runs a lot better mileage wise.

and look to the Aussies and NZers, they’ve been doing RB’s since they came out over there. Mainly 20’s for them. there is no extra payoff, I believe that the SR’s and RB20’s have the same power potential, I don’t think the RB is better than the SR, at all. I think it’s better for me. In fact, I would go so far as to say, if I was looking to build a race motor that had 400whp, I would go so far as to say, I would pick an SR for the only reason that parts are very availble to do that and that there have been many many 400whp SR’s in North America so it’s no rare thing.

Whereas, if I was in Australia where parts are a dime a dozen and 400whp rb20’s are no rare thing…I’d do that.

You said 24 months, three cars have been names already. Maybe they’re not super fast but they’re still going strong.

Word, I hear you. There are idiots out there who say that shit just to be cool. Then again, there are idiots out there who also do the SR and call them Silvia motors. Just to be cool. I never understood the whole “just to be different” mentality. I think it’s retarded. Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with individuality or doing something different, but as long as it’s not for the sake of doing it different…then you’re just an idiot trying to be cool.

If you were to ask me in person why I would choose the RB, I’d tell you what I wrote…you would NEVER ever hear from my mouth the words “cuz everyone else has an SR” or “cuz it’s a skyline” or “i wanted to do things a little different.”

But…it does sound a hell of a lot better and there are some pretty stout reasons for having more cylinders.

I dunno. I like large numbers of cylinders. My perfect motor would be a 2.5 litre V10. With a redline of 10,500.

Definitely would if I could afford it  or the Judd series v8s

I did my latest RB swap just cause it was a better choice for me money wise and parts wise. However that does not mean the SR20 is a bad choice. Me and the guy doing the RB26 on his S13 are in the process of Swapping an SR20 in our friends 4 door R32. Its the different strokes for different folks theory in action. For every person that Swaps an RB20 in their cars for “the sound” we have the same amount of people swapping SR20’s in their cars cause its jdm tyte.

The bottom line is we should stop the whole son telling people that SRs are the only choice and limit the chatter to legitimate help not bashing.

It’s getting old as mark would say roflcopter.

The sr is not a bad motor, but for one’s goals/reality-check/etc… one has to evaluate various pros/cons. Different strokes for different folks like the above guy said.

The SR is not bad for 200-350whp… its also fairly light… so its a no brainer but its not as cheap as people make it sound. You’re getting a junkyard motor that will need attention + supporting parts/mods + labour if you’re not fortunate enough to have a garage, tools, skill, experience, time, etc… It’s funny when people throw out the ooh yeah you can get this for 2000 and then this for 3000 blabla… and then when you start breaking stuff or modding and wanting more power… starts adding up too.

It’s not as black and white as folks make it soundt to be. That’s why I’m patient with my handy dandy boltons KA and waiting for doing the real deal when the time is right

To add to all this I never once said hey boy’s I am putting a skyline motor into my 240sx coupe man its so cool…

I think i said I am installing an rb20det in my 240sx coupe and it’s tha way I want to go…

Back on track now that we have all had fun, anyone know where a good place to find these parts are?
No parts store has heard of a flipping skyline ! ! ! ! !

Well, here you go.

As mentioned.

Can we move on with our lives and our SRs, leave the RB guys with their cars, not be bastards but be stars (does this line rhyme or what?).

I know, I fail.

Should have an off limits to this thread to guys who want to bash or create unnecessary argument when there is none necessary lol.

I like apples you like oranges /thread.

The sound of an rb20 is what sold me. I could care less about have a skyline engine =/

You can’t just call up Canadian Tire, Parts Source, or NAPA for this stuff. It’s a JDM motor, of course they will have nothing in stock. I can’t believe you did that haha.

You need to call importers, check out places like Raw Brokerage, Tuner Lab, etc. You need to deal with people that specialize in JDM /JDM Nissan. Hang out on GTRC, read up there for more options. You will never find a regular shop stocking parts for a vehicle that was never sold here.

Turbo_Crazy PM me I know a guy who can get any OEM RB series part.

OK now that everyone has calmed down and there hasn’t been a post for a little bit BACK ON TOPIC

What and where to get a good set of mounts? I have heard tophat mounts are good and reliable mounts?
Wiring up the car for the rb20det? Who does this? Post a link or send me a pm if you do it or know someone local that does. Or even a how to guide would work also.

I have a radiator, intercooler, exhaust, t28 turbo (from rb25det), new flywheel and clutch (on its way).

I don’t think I am missing anything else just replacement parts, wiring and mounts.

??? huh?? how’d you get that? They’re not t28’s on the 25.

what are they???
I baught it off someone on here…

It’s not a T28. Either way, I hope you paid no more than $200 for it. They are a dime a dozen now.

The stock turbo off an RB25 is the most common upgrade for an RB20, all you would need to do is swap the wastegate actuator and I believe it’s a direct bolt on.

The s1 and s2 rb25 turbo’s yes, not the NEO. The RB25 NEO turbo is ball bearing and made of steel and ceramic where as the s1 and s2 RB’s are strictly ceramic and cheap. You won’t find a NEO turbo for $200 unless your super lucky.

Still not sure which turbo exactly he’s bought…

Throw some specs up?

Ok on the exhaust side of the trubo there are these markings
21U / 616A
On the air side of the turbo there are these markings
45V1 and the wastegate has the big 26 on it (i know rb20det have a big 24 on them)

The turbo is clean with no play and does direct bolt on so it was a good choice of cheap upgrade till more money rolls in.

That’s an S1 RB25 turbo.

How much did you pay?

How much should I have paid?

It wasn’t expensize I got a box of goodies for $400 delivered

Also for anyone interested in parts and toys check out my website at www.r-rex.com
Anything listed there is open for trades on good rb20det stuff.

Need to get the swap ready to go as I think I might blow the ka quicker than I hoped for

$200ish for the turbo alone is pretty good, so I guess if the box included well worth it parts and you got your moneys worth for $400 than I don’t see a problem.
