I’m hoping to buy an S14 before the end of the month, assuming that the current owner decides he’s 100% on selling before the season.
The car has a red top SR20, T28 currently on “stock” boost & tune. I’ll be looking into a more aggressive tune and some more boost, but that’s not the important thing right now. The car sits on SPL KTS coilovers & Gramlight 57’s, with a Z32TT BBk on the front.
My problem is in the rear. It’s running an open diff, and stock brakes right now. I’ll be using the car for AutoX duty, and looking for some more hp, so I want to go with an LSD and a rear brake upgrade, while keeping the e-brake.
Should I go with something like a Kaaz 2-way and a brake upgrade, or should I just look into swapping most of the rear end? What is available for a swap, and what might be the pros/cons? If anyone just has some links to info/discussion it would be great, or if not, I’d love to get a discussion going on here.
What am I looking at for prices & availability? Ballpark’s obviously.
Thanks for your time.
If the main purpose of the car is autox, do not get a 2 way. 2ways are mainly for drifitng, you’ll be locking up like crazy. Go for a 1.5 way or grab a helica lsd from an S15 if you can find one.
Just go for a z32 rear brake + ebrake setup. Easiest solution, you could find a complete setup for a few hundred bucks. Also, get the Z32 BMC when you upgrade the rears.
Hey thanks a lot man, yeah I’ll do some more searching/reading on here/Nico in the coming weeks. I just wanted to get my head wrapped around what I was looking for before I got very far into it. Much appreciated.
Its not. All u need is the fronts.
Do the front swap, get ss flex lines all around and some hawk hps pads and good rotors. and if for some reason u feel its not enough stoping power, then upgrade the rears. As for rear end. Just find a used low km vlsd. And get some good tires. Have a seperate set track rims for autox events with r-compounds.
What do you use for R-comps man?
A few friends of mine have been using the Kumho V710’s and the Hoosier A6’s, both of which are real sticky, but wear the quickest.
I’ve been talking to a few guys about the Ra-1’s (R888’s), and the A032R’s (A048R’s), which don’t quite have the grip, but last much much longer.
I’m thinking that I’s want something with a decent treadwear, as nobody wants to go through more than one set of R-comps in a season (unless your hardcore).
A friend of mine bought some Nitto NT01’s for his DSM last year and only got 2 events on them all year, but he said they were comparable to the RA-1’s in terms of treadwear, but a little more sticky.
Also, I wonder what size wheel will fit over the Z32tt brakes?
you definately want to upgrade the rear brakes on a competitive car. Z32 rears is the easiest upgrade… the only tricky parts are the e-brake cables and making sure you get all the guts for the e-brake drum assembly.
Z brakes are 4 pot front and 2 pot rear… iirc. i run them on my car and running just fronts is okay for street and light track but for harder track you definately need to upgrade the rears.
where you’re located, sourcing the S15 diff the other little things you need will be way harder than just getting a Kaaz or Nismo 1.5 way and having a competent shop toss it in…
There isn’t much for “Competent shops” around here.
All the serious cars are modded and worked by the owners only, myself included.
I’d have no problems swapping in a diff, but you’re right, the logistics are always the problem.
Bing, do you have a link to a comprehensive parts list for the Z32 rears?
I’ll do some searching later this week when I get some time.
Hey Jon. It’s KAT from tmec. I’ve had my eye on the markets for a rear differential since the beginning of the new year. Other than S13 ones, S14 and S15 rear differentials don’t pop up too often. At this point, I’m interested in following those nicoclub links and just getting a housing and installing an aftermarket diff. Lots of reading to do just to make sure everything is done to tolerance w/ shims. If you have better luck sourcing a differential, good for you!
Hey man,
If you do decide on going with an aftermarket diff, let me know, and maybe we could get a deal on a GB going or something. Maybe even pass it through Bing or a vendor on here to see what they could do for us.
I may not be looking at this as diligently as you are due to other priorities so if you want to take the lead, I will respectively follow. I feel like a lot of reading has to be done because there are so many options available, even the J30 VLSD.
If we can talk about this privately, b6ma@uwaterloo.ca or via facebook.
if your in toronto or quebec i’m sure there are alot of japanese importing places you can get a z32 rear end from. if you get a complete rear end you have less headache in missing parts. average going rate for a z32 rear end was 350cad i think not to sure now.
no matter what you will still need r33 gtst ebrake cables to bolt it straight up so z32 ebrakes cable don’t matter unless you want to cheap out and clamp the z32 ebrake cables like this (i wouldn’t do it that way)
lol…as I said on my other thread a few minutes ago, it looks like this car is no longer a go, the owner doesn’t want to sell until the end of the summer.
Thanks a lot for all the info man, but if I get what I want this time around, it will have a full conversion already in place.
I appreciate the info.
