i did this years ago…
just go to barrie or peterborough
get the box in the post office
pay for it
come back every few weeks or get someone to pick up yer mail there
the only mail that will go there is whoever knows the address.
barrie and peterborough should drop yer price by half.
dont change provinces it causes lots of other issues.
also teh 25k to work thing saves almost no money…don’t bother lie-ing about that…its probly only worth $20/month.
but’ll save yer ass v.s. getting caught
just go to a small town… and rent one… or a place where a friend of yours lives… not sure mines only 79 dls a month for the skyline hehehe… but i got US insurance and im 25.
so do i say i live there? or go to school there and come back here sometimes? cause, what owuld happen if knock on wood… i get in an accident or speeding ticket or something… what do i tell them when they see my address is in peterborough or barrie?
what you don’t take deays off work / school?
say you were visiting yer parents.
tell them you live there…
many many people in the boonies NEED a PO box or NO mail.
this is canada…
if you get us insurance you will be in a heap of hurt come an accident as tehy will use your no US citizen styatus as a reason not to cover you…
and also you won’t be able to sue your insurance company when the cut you off POST accident for not pre-informing them, that you will be out of country with your car.
take my word for it they will take your money and keep it…also if its not a registerrd seller of insurance for THE ONTARIO market then your papers will be worthless and you will be deemed to not have insurance.
this will be discovered and shared by the insuance company of the other person when you get into an accident (at fault or not)
because then they will get to pay for the damages out of and insurance companie “no Insuance driver” insurance system they have
stay with an ontario company as they need to be registered AND LISCENCED to sell insurance IN ONTARIO.
if you change provinces you must change the plates and your liscence to match that province.
at all times them address on your liscence and insurance must match…or
…by law, you do not have insurance…
stay in ontario…I lived in a marina on a boat…wheres the mailbox for that???
nope no box…but a P.O. box was no problem…
my insurance went from $7000/yr to $1500…
…I’d say thats good enough for not actually breaking the law…
sweeet. so wait. after i rent the mailbox in say peterborough or barrie… i have to change the address on my license to the address that i’m using in peterborough or barrie (or whichever address i claim to live at) so that, in event of an accident or speeding ticket, my insurance will be valid?
lindsay is a good place to pick…lots of farms etc.
(I’m from oshawa).
yes if you get pulled over for a ticket and the 2 adresses don’t match you will also get a ticket for no insurance as the insurance is “officially” invalid.
some cops don’t care tho.
Zep’s really lucky with his insurance…
but I have no idea if he has US citizenship (dual?) or a green card…this will for sure make a difference
I did that for a while…living in Toronto and I had my insurance and registration for Brantford. The driver’s license was at a Toronto address. I had a bit of ‘splainin’ to do to Officer Dognut eater when I got my last speeding ticket. “Oh, I just moved, forgot to change the info…blah, blah, blah”. Now all the info is for Toronto. Also, don’t forget about the plate sticker stuff. You have to present valid insurance, reg. and your license. Not sure if there will be grief over the insurance, reg. and license having two different addresses. Ahh, who knows. They probably just check to see if all is valid anyway. Sign. Stamp. Push. Next!
I was going to consider doing this,
Get my skyline before I go visit my family in winnipeg, Get plates, insurance, and yadda all that other good stuff, then fly back with my plates, put em on my car but tell the insurance company its an out of province vehicle. ? Any idea’s? the car has no collision on it anyways so if i crash they fix his and mine is up to me.
the only concern is out of province or country insurance companies.
not all of them are licensed to sell insurance here in ontario.
but they’ll gladly sell it to you…so when you crash yer screwed.
just make sure all the addresses match.
tell them you are staying in a marina or something that won’t let you have an address there. (IF THEY ASK)
then let them hack your insurance in half.
barrie is no longer a 50% refuge…just like house prices sky-rocketed…so did the insurance.
my folks are on rice lake…when they moved there from brampton…
their insurance dropped by %60+…and they already had all the discounts you can get…they didn’t even change companies or nuthin!
people on the islands there DO NOT get mail dropped at the door.
so… they have a PO box in town
as mentioned earlier, it is a better bet to have it in a different city, whereas if it is registered in another province, that will sort of be tricky to explain to the cop if you ever were to get in an accident, some cops who don’t understand the situation would probably just slap an un-reasonable ticket on your a$$.
so wait, since there are new homes getting built in barrie, and its starting to get more populated, the insurance is rate is rising since there are more people thus, more chances to get in an accident, makes sense…
so would anyone have any other suggestions that i can rent a mailbox somewhere? i really don’t want to drive all the way to ottawa or montreal.
there should be a drift event soon there, i’m thinking of going to one of them, so i guess when that happens i’ll rent one. but other than that, anyone got any other suggestions?
is peterborough still an okay place? my cousins live in peterborough, but i’m 100% sure my relatives wouldn’t let me do it, because they are hardcore BY THE BOOK and anything that dupes the system or whatever, to them is considered “cheating” blah blah blah. so i can’t even ask them =(. So yeah, if anything i’ll rent a p.o. box from peterborough.
that comment about people not having mail dropped off at their door, and how they get it at a p.o. box is a perfect explanation.
mikeP is probably right.
besides it’ll save you 15 mins of driving.
I love that whole area of Ontario.
why people do 3+hrs to get to barrie is beyond me.
same kind of beauty is 1.5 hrs east.
insurance “fiddling” like this is the most basic thing to do.
just don’t get greedy and try for $2.00 / month.
This can blow up in your face as it is…
you can get caught and have yer insurance revoked…
gubment scam I say
but the likelyhood of you getting caught at this is very slim.
I got away with mine for about 5 yrs… then I got married baught a house etc.
it all adds up
but that time you had insurance for 5 yrs… it adds up to your “experience” and when you get insurance at another company, and they see all the years under your belt, it it was a clean record, it still does good for your future rate right?
