Restaurants that don't suck thread

A thread for restaurants that do not suck… we can have a suck-food thread later maybe…

I’ve been to most of the better places in Hamilton over the last 2 years I’ve lived here. I’ll go step by step through my reviews of the places in Hamilton… expecting to see some Buffalo, Rochester, Mississauga and Toronto reviews…

No national chains, no pizza (we should have a separate thread for that entirely), no buffets… basically, if there is no entree on the menu over $30 then don’t bother putting it here unless it deserves special mention. We’ll also have to have a Roti-specific thread at some point in the immediate future as well.

Sirloin Cellar - Hamilton downtown

Over-rated… heard lots of great things. i no longer care for the opinions of anyone who recommended this place. It’s basically the steak-house equivalent to The Cosy (my family’s restaurant)… meaning, it’s waaay past prime… It’s passable, but i would never go there by choice.

Shakespeares - Hamilton downtown

Same as Sirloin Cellar… these places are from back when Hamilton didnt quite suck as much as it does today… these restaurants i do not think have changed at all in 30 years… very average by today’s standards. I would not return unless it was socially inappropriate not to.

La Cantina - Hamilton downtown

Great atmosphere, good service, fantastic bread… food quality is high but i just haven’t had a dish there that would bring me back yet. However, the rest of the place is good enough such that i will continue going back on rare occasion until i find a dish or couple of dishes to choose from that i really like… I am sure I’ll find it. This place is several times better than the previous two.

Lo Presti’s - Hamilton downtown

Mega old-school feel. Server’s wear suits or tux’s or something. Everyone is old including most of the clientele but the food is great, the service is great too. I had one dish here, their escargot, that was wrapped in phyllo (<spelling) and drizzled with some crazy sauce it was incredible… haven’t had a bad meal here… been 3-4 times… service was great whether it was private room or just with the wife at random. Would go back and would recommend.

Fuloney’s - Ancaster

Not bad, not great… i have to go back one or two more times. Supposedly known for steaks, the menu selection was appropriate for a steak house. The NY strip i had here was solid, but not remarkable. The dining room lay-out is weird; it was distracting a little bit actually. It was a few months ago that i went… tough to remember but that means 5-6 out of 10 anyways.

La Spaghett - Hamilton Mountain

You have to go here. Small to the point of annoying, service is borderline terrible at times… and yet, the food is incredible… i’ve been more than 10 times and will keep going… i’m one of very few people that order take-out there… they are totally not set-up for it but it means that i can enjoy the food and not have to endure the rest of it. Nothing over $20 on the menu… choose your style, chose your pasta… go. Tons of garlic, like too much no matter what. The fruit medley salad is the best salad you can get anywhere. the garlic soup will kill vampires. Go.

Romano’s - Hamilton Mountain

I have to go here often because it’s close to my office. The first 5-6 times i went i hated the place… took my wife there and hated it even more after that but the last 3 times i’ve been have been exceptionally redeeming. The pear salad and the spicy pepper oil are great… bread is always good because the place is in a bread factory… the restaurant is definitely an after-thought and every table has at least 2 Italian people sitting at it no matter what time of day. I wouldn’t quite recommend the place yet, but i can see me getting to that point soon.

Prime - Burlington

did a spouse dinner thing here with Dan (U2N) and i think he’ll agree that other than the company ( ) the place was pretty solid. Steaks were above average. Service was okay, crab was good, salad was pretty good… we were there for the taste of bulington, by chance, but the menu was pretty good anyways. I’d definitely go back and bring people along. The place turns into a club at night and it was super annoying when they started playing the deep bass when there were still diners in there but whatever, cant have it all i guess.

There are quite a few in Buffalo, however, hands-down, the best dining experience in this city has to be Tempo on Delaware.

If you’ve got a bit of money to burn, meaning expect 100-130 pp with drinks, then spend it at Paul Jenkins’ place, you won’t be sorry.

Here’s the site:
Tempo

Dinosaur. 3 Locations. Rochester, Syracuse, NYC. Best barbecue I’ve had anywhere. St Louis, Dallas, anywhere. There are good bbq places in Buffalo, but not one that compares to Dinosaur.

I’ll be trying this place next, heard good things.

Need more details on it…

What’s this Left Bank place Beck’s on-jock for?

If you’re ever in Banff, Alberta, you MUST go to the Grizzly House. Best meal I’ve ever had, hands down: http://banffgrizzlyhouse.com/

In Thornhill, check out Stonefire Bar and Grill: http://www.stonefirebarandgrill.com/

yo… restaurant title and details… i need to know WHY it was the best meal ever…

and yes, if the servers are hot that is an important feature to note.

Grizzly House – best food ever.

Great service (mostly male servers though).

Had a french onion soup and caesar salad to start. DEFINITELY the best french onion soup I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The bowl was COVERED in cheese – and not shitty cheese, some high quality shit. Caesar salad had an excellent homemade dressing.

Next came the cheese fondue. I can’t remember what the cheeses were, but it was a blend of 3 different cheeses, as well as some sort of liquor. You dip the softest, freshest, just-out-of-the-oven white bread in the cheese. You could literally eat this shit all day until you pass out from a disgusting intake of wheat.

On to the main course. Your choice of 2 meats (I chose filet mignon and chicken because I’m a bit of a food pussy), but later tried some caribou that my buddy ordered. They literally have every time of meat in the world, except for human flesh. I’m talking grizzly bear, snake, shark, deer, alligator, caribou, you name it.

So how do you cook the meat? You cook it on a REAL rock. The meat is brought out raw, and you’re given a REAL STONE that has been heated in the oven. You cook the meat (takes about 2-3 minutes), and then dip it in one of SEVEN, yes SEVEN sauces. I can’t remember all of the sauces, but there was a bacon and onion sauce, a sweet and sour, a homemade teriyaki, dijon mustard, and a bunch more. The bacon sauce was out of this world, and the teriyaki was probably the best I’ve ever had.

So WTF is for dessert? Toblerone chocolate fondue. I fucking HATE dessert and I was eating this shit up. They brought out almost every type of fruit I’ve ever seen, and great examples of it all. I saw blackberries that make the plantlife in Avatar look like a JOKE.

So there you have it, the best meal I’ve ever had. It cost about ~$70 per person, but I would have paid twice that. In fact, I’d fucking pay a helicopter to fly me out there right now. Is anyone in?

I’m fucking serious, this meal is worth flying out for.

Stonefire: great food and atmosphere

They start you off with some amazingly fresh, warm bread (and some flat cracker things), with some whipped butter and olive oils. Good shit.

I had a caesar salad to start – was very good. Not the BEST ever, but definitely worth ordering.

For my entree I had veal parmigiana, which came with some spaghetti on the side. It had an alfredo sauce which was good, but my friend had ordered a cheese ravioli that came with the BEST rose sauce I’ve ever tasted – so I had the server bring me on the side to drench my noodles with.

Overall a great meal. Ran me about $50. Would recommend bringing a date here – not really a place to go with your buddies (unless you’re a professional amateur food critic like myself).

Tako Sushi – Don Mills/York Mills (Toronto), great Tepanyaki.

Amazing tepanyaki, great prices.

For lunch you can get the filet mignon meal for $8.99 – dinner is $12.99. They also make a mean chicken fried udon noodle dish which is $7.99.

Filet mignon meal comes with Japanese salad, miso soup, filet mignon, veggies, rice (dinner is fried rice with steak/egg), and ice cream for dessert.

Great bang for the buck, high quality food. Not the BEST service out there, but fuck it.

The atmosphere is NOTHING like the prices. It’s pretty upscale inside. And they cook everything in front of you.

^ Bing if you’re flying out to Banff you better take me with you – that took a while to write.

If any body is ever in London ONT

Best place that I have been too is Bertoldi’s

Been their 4 times, they are mainly an Italian restaurant. I have had the basic spahetti and meatballs and it was the best I have ever tasted, to the wood smoked tuna. Great atmosphere, good place to go for a first date.

I spent 40-50 pp with 1 drink each. Priced very reasonably.

sushi contribution…

If you want nice Pakistani/Bangali food, on gerard street there’s “786 restaurent”. Try the jumbo fried fish! lol… I love it, because when I was in UAE, I ate that fish EVERY day  I don’t know of any other place that preps it that way. The rest is just random desi food made well.

McDonalds:

  • Don’t serve caviar
  • Suck

^I lol’d @ mcdonalds

The Friar’s Table- Cheektowaga NY.
Outstanding prime rib and lobster tails. Surf and turfs up to 3lbs of each. You will pay for it however.
Old school decor inside, pictures of jolly fat little friars all over and a medieval theme. Went for V-day and had to go back 2 weeks later.

Root Five = Left Banks head chef, sous-chef and a couple line cooks. If you haven’t tried it in a while, give it a whirl.

rootfive and leftbank’s menu’s don’t look all that awesome but very impressed with the websites…

Tempo looks hawt… that’s next for sure.

any brazilian steakhouses in B-Lo?

There are a couple in Niagara Falls (Canadian side) but everything in NF sucks… i had an ny strip + Lobster at Canyon Creek at the new Casino 2 weeks ago and it was an atrocity

Was at Fuloney’s again tonight for a function… pretty much done with that place… it’s not terrible, but it’s also not hard to cook a steak oneself… you gotta do something special for it to be worth paying money for and it just isn’t there.

I was recently making some dinner reservations on OpenTable and I saw that this was one of the highest rated places in NY. I thought, must be another place in Manhattan… mouse over and I see that it’s in Buffalo… and then it reminded me of this thread.

Next time I’m up there, I’m going.

No Brazillian steakhouses around here that I know of.

Their homepage says something right now about their chef’s having just won some Nickel City chef competition thing.

We need a brazilian steakhouse/churrascaria. eternally green meat card FTW.

Bombay Grill: Best indian food I’ve found in Burlington, probably some of the best I’ve ever had. Everything from this place is good.

Pomelo: Best Viet / Thai food in Burlington - these guys make amazing food (dine or take out), curry and satays and mango salad… amazing stuff, everything I’ve had here has been fantastic.
