Restaurants that don't suck thread

Real Italians eat their pasta as a seperate course before their main course… Well, real Italian-Americans. Well, real Sicilian-Italian-Americans. I don’t know anyone that lives in Italy or is first generation immigrated from Italy.

YUCK!

.

I’ve heard! And my friend is tending on Sundays now, so I’ll have to give it a whirl.

I gave this place two tries because I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt since our first meal was barely par. It was opening week and I know kinks needed to be worked. Our second visit was more enjoyable, and the food was a little better. I’m not wowed by this place at all. It isn’t outstanding and it isn’t awful, it’s just a spiffy extension of the Cole’s menu as far as I’m concerned.

^friends with marshall?

I had the pastrami last week jeff, very good. haven’t had the wings yet

edit: jeff I was also surprised about your experiences with seabar and kuni’s.

how so?

and i have to say, after a few years of frequenting seabar i am pretty meh on the menu now. it doesnt change, its been the same roll options since day one. never any new ones to try, never any specials except for oysters or an entree…

Went to the steakhouse in the seneca casino, that place is pretty good, and not that expensive either.

I like good Itialian/American/Handmade pasta. I try not to get too hung up on if it is “authentic” because well most all of our dining for the most part is some form of change to some other style applied over time etc etc.

Anyhow in buff if you would like some fresh pasta Trattoria Aroma always hits the spot for me

Also  good thread

Sinatra’s on Kenmore Ave, was a good meal last time I went.

I went there for a work dinner, so it could be that they were just making sure everything was good for us to get a solid tip. As far as seafood places that I have been to, it’s been one of the better ones. But take that with a grain of salt as I’m not big on seafood in general.

In no particular order, my list of the best (medium to high-end) meals in the Buffalo area:

Carmelos - everything that’s awesome about italian, definitely opt for the salumi/charcuterie all house made by Bruce W.
Bistro Europa - Whole animal cooking, very pork-centric
Tempo
Shango - Creole inspired, everything is usually awesome.
Hotel Athenaeum (Opt for one of the pop-up restaurant nights/special events – Ross is one of the best young chefs around)
Park Country Club
Mulberry Italian Ristorante
Mike A’s Steakhouse - no knock against the steaks, but I recommend ordering non-steak items if you know how to cook a proper steak at home. The F*ck California Burger is insane.
Seabar - Still the best quality fish I’ve had anywhere around.
Daniels in Hamburg
Trattoria Aroma

Best Cocktails in Buffalo:

Vera - Hands Down
Mike A’s Bar

Wow, that is a strong statement. Care to expand?

You need a second mortgage to drink at Mike A’s. $10-12 drinks in Buffalo

Come see me whippin’ drinks behind the bar, too.

Calm down. Everyone says the same shit about Vera. They’re making cocktails using some of the best ingredients. Sit down and enjoy your drink instead of slamming $4 well drinks or bud lights.

Obviously not your type of place, but they are worth it.

Is this about the old orchard? That place is horrible. When I used to work in EA back in the day our company would always take us there and we all nicknamed it “the old stomachache”. Let’s just say the food is horrible, the crowd is literally busses full of old people from nursing homes, and I definitely got a burger with a moldy bun the one time.

I don’t think they are worth it when they are in a small ass glass with a giant fucking ice cube. Just had my work Christmas party down at the Hotel Laf tonight. The pseudo-Pearl St drinks put Mike A’s to shame for the money. I’m not Betty Draper ordering a gimlet. I am ordering a Captain and Coke…I don’t need the best ingredients or some foofy shit. I need Captain Morgan in copious amounts, some type of mixer, a pint glass as opposed to a little one, and my wallet not to get ass raped for $9.

best part about not drinking alcohol is the not drinking of alcohol.

For the people that don’t drink alcohol, what do you usually order to drink at a restaurant? I always feel almost awkward not ordering alcohol at nice restaurants lol. Though I often do simply drink a diet coke.

I agree with you 100 percent, i get you are paying for an atmosphere but $9-12 per drink when at the many of the area bars are $3-6 is a bit rediculous. I could understand if it was some crazy top self drink with fresh fruits and mutiple liquors but 9 dollars for 17 cents of coca cola and 60 cents of captain is retarted.

yeaaa… if you are ordering captain and cokes at mike a’s…you are in the wrong venue.

Its not the kind of place to get shitty. If you want to do that, hang out with the kids on chip strip.

I’m a big fan of their vodka gimlets, mainly because its pretty much vodka on the rocks with a twist. These arnt well vodka drinks either, you use whatever brand of booze you want.

Also, one of my favorite things about this place is you can go on a fri/sat and actually have a conversation. most places have some shitty band playing / music louder than it should be / combination of both with shitty acoustics…

But I’m an old man and rarely out past 11 anymore…
