you have to up your town halls level i believe…
you have to upgrade your town hall, i remember from the beginning i couldn’t mine sulfur right away. so try that out…
Upgraded to 2, upgrading to 3 now. Still can’t mine wood or wine.
just remember, you need some people first 
get a tavern, make your people happy, make babies… build your colony, and then put em to the mines/wood!
Also Jeff, on my colony where do I view my resources for that island?
Click on the drop-down box at the top of the screen. It should say your original towns name in it right now. If you pull down on it, it’ll let you choose your new town.
I get bored of things fast, this being one of them, so I just collect materials, money, yadda and try to upgrade so I can give you guys stuff. If any of you need free stuff lmk in game and ill hook ya up

Edit: He finished it and said its not really worth it unless you have like 20,000 crystal. Then you can skip over one thing to research for 20K in crystal.
I just did. It is retarded.Unlike the island where you can slowly put money towards the goal, with glass research you need ALL of the glass on hand to finish the research with.So, after Glass research, I need 18,458 more glass on hand to complete my next research…I did use it to finish a couple of seafaring ones needing only 1000. Besides that, it wasn’t really worth it. When am I going to save up 20,000+ glass for one research?

I shot right for glass research, so there were some cheap ones that I bought up.
Besides that though, the higher up the research the more glass you need. It may be useful if i just save up 80,000 glass for future stuff.
