do i lose or gain any power if i dont run my exhaust with a muffler. i think my pipping is 2" or 2.5. i think its closer to 2".
it has a stock cat and then a dummy cat. i heard that the ka needs backpressure and if it doesn’t it loses power? but im wondering since i have a 2" pipping and a cat, wouldn’t that be enough backpressure? also the muffler is leaking a bit so not sure if its efficient at all.
yeah when my magnaflow exhaust fell off it had like no power at all. I have 2.5" piping but at the time it was stock with a stock cat. I would say get it welded quick.
really? mine doesn’t seem so bad. maybe it seems fast cause the sound is so loud and deep. you can hear everything even if you press the gas pedal 1mm. with that siad, i also notice that the throttle control is much better. is this true or am i just imagining things?
I’m running an HKS Hi-Power “style” exhaust on my car with a megan test pipe, 3" from the downpipe back. (It’s for the future turbo engine :P) You’re not imagining things with the extra throttle response, it revs up quicker because there isn’t as much restriction. As to loss of back pressure affecting torque; I’ve seen dyno graphs that show a drop in like 3HP but for actual driving experience I haven’t really noticed much of a difference, it just seems to smoothe things out and makes the engine less “peaky”.
i did a motor swap on an AE86 - 1986 4AGE from an MR2. the car had straight 3" exhaust. after the swap was done, i took it out for a spin. at low revs, it was as slow as dirt, but after about 5500-6000 rpm, it really began to move.
this is because larger diameter piping allows the exhaust gases to cool en-route. as we all know, cool air is more dense, creating slow exhaust flow and the engine would be working to push a heavier air mass out the tailpipe. at higher revs, the motor is working faster and is pushing out exhaust gases at a higher rate, giving the gases less time to cool before exiting the exhaust sytem.
you have 2" piping last time i checked. i don’t think a leak in the muffler should have any noticable effect on the power of the car, should just make it a bit louder. the purpose of a muffler is to muffle the sound, the exhaust gases should still be exiting at about the same rate.
you asked if you lose or gain power if you ran without a muffler? it might be slightly less restrictive without one and might give you a little bit of top end power (i don’t even think it would be noticable with a stock KA with that size piping and stock headers - it’s expensive to get any respectable HP from the KA)… buy why would you want to? it’s loud as hell (3" test tipe on the Hachi was crazy loud), just attracts attention, and will get you neat tickets.
ya well its for this upcoming drift event. if it can pass the 98 decible then i have the option of taking it off.
so id have a bit more top end? and more throttle response right?
seems good to me then. i don’t need low end since drifting a KA requires to be ON the gas at all times. and more throttle response is always good. i just hope it can pass the sound test. it should right? its loud but i don’t think its CRAZY loud. i only have 2" piping.
my muffler detaches from my exhaust in a matter of 20seconds of pulling off the 2 exhaust hangers. the welds broke off from the pipping to the muffler. so its not that much hassle. takes seconds dude.
