Imagine a place like the YMCA but instead of workout machines they had tools and lifts. Instead of swimming lessons painting or engine building lessons.
How much would you pay for a six month membership to join?
some more details that someone might ask:
classes have their own cost.
-The shop is outfitted with every tool imaginable from CNC machines to tig welders.
-The shop has multiple lifts each available for $10/day
-Air tools, welders, and the more expensive machinery have daily prices from $10-50 per day but all is located on site.
-you may store your car at the shop for up to 3 weeks indoors and longer periods of time out doors.
This started off as a marketing plan but now I am really curious, and of course research and accurate numbers should help my grade.
aside from my having thought of this a long ass time ago, I’d say no more than $500 for 6 months would be fair, I’d be happy paying $300 for 6 months though.
The liability to run something like that would be outragelously expensive if it actually did go into effect. I’m sure someone has thought of this before and tried to actually do it and found it to be VERY expensive.
I am working on the project as if I was actually able to do it since I like the idea so much. It doesn’t really look like it would ever profit unless you charged $600 every six months and maintained over 50 members… before insurance.
Jesse reminds me of one more thing. Can you all post your pick and your demographic, for example if you have a garage and a decent amount of tools? My plan has already targeted tech school and college students who live in dorms or apartments.
You cant rent bare garage space (w/o power/water) for less than $100/mo. So this wont work unless people are willing to pay what its worth to rent the space.
Mike this probably isnt your target market either. College students do not = $.
you dont need 20 bays, my plans calls for 8 in basically a warehouse. you could get by with probably 6. but yes, the startup costs would be huge. insurance would be huge.
I vote under $300. It might work if you add hourly rental for non membership customers, but member customer always have priority on tools and bays.
I think it will work if it is an indoor/outdoor storage facility first, but with a few bays on a separate building near the main storage with tools for rental so people can work on their cars in a detached building and away from the main storage.
That is, if you can afford the insurance for this business to work.
we called that the “auto hobby shop” on base. it was 1.50 per hour for a flat stall, free tools, or 3/hr for as lift, also free tools… bays had a weekly rental as well, but never needed it, i beleive it was 70$ for a weekley fee.
to work, you must sign a waiver. only trained members can operate lifts and machines such as tire mount/balance if they would exist… things like that can be worked out in an insurance agreement… theyt are liable for their own actions. its like going to the gym, you cant sue best fitness because youre dumb and dropped 350lb on your chest and cracked a rib.
