Screeching belt on 2000 CR-V

So, my alternator belt started screeching on startup and chirping a bit while driving. I am pretty sure that it just needs an adjustment, but i don’t trust myself doing it. Anybody want to help me out or point me in the right direction? Don’t feel like paying way too much for something I know should be a pretty simple job.

I really doubt there is an adjustment. It should have an automatic tensioner, which means it’s probably time to change the belt.

The tensioner could be going bad and causing it but my money is on the belt which is probably still the factory one.

Temporary fix - rub a bar of soap on it.

^ Good way to lose a finger too.

2000 crv is a b20 right? If that’s the case, it’s like every other b series- you just pry with a screwdriver and tighten the bolt

Are you positive it’s the alternator belt? My guess is that your power steering pump is leaking causing the screeching noise

If you want to try it out yourself, loosen the top alternator bolt, get a flathead screwdriver, shove that in between the block and the alternator, and tighten it back up

Like to see that trick on a serpentine belt !

not while the car is on,lol.

Simple yet impressive.

I’ll tighten the belt if you can’t find anyone. I’m near main st and UB south campus. It’s a 2 minute job.

So these really didn’t have an auto tensioner in 2000?

Nope. They also have individual accessory belts

Thanks for the replies. I am almost 100% positive it is the alternator belt. I don’t see any type of leaking at all, so I don’t think that its the power steering pump causing it. Like I said, not something I feel comfortable messing around with so I keep my hands off. It only squeals for a few seconds when I start the car and then stops.
