Shopping for a new car next year (wife's next daily driver)

The next car coming into our household will replace my future wife’s current daily driver. The intent will be a MID-size sedan, manual transmission, ~$35k price limit. All models will be a 2005 or later by the time the purchase happens.

Haven’t started test driving anything yet, but here’s my primary “short list” so far:

  • Nissan Altima 3.5SE
  • Acura TSX
  • Mazda 6 GS/GT?

Secondary list (haven’t explored these too much):

  • Subaru Legacy GT
  • Volvo S40
  • VW Passat 1.8T
  • Audi A4 1.8T

The ones that don’t make the cut right off the bat:

  • Honda Accord V6 (no manual w/ v6!!)
  • Toyota Camry V6 - Waaaaayyyy to bland and boring
  • Infiniti G35 sedan - too expensive
  • Nissan Maxima - a bit too expensive, ~$5k more than equivalent Altima
  • Lexus IS300 - a bit too expensive, and too small

There will be NO domestic crap on my list.

My current favorite (not having driven anything yet) is still the TSX. The car is packaged beautifully and it has everything! The only potential weakness is its power to weight ratio compared to the Altima and Accord V6 models. Still the 2.4L iVTEC w/ 6-speed is supposed to be silky smooth and 200hp ain’t too shabby regardless. Hopefully I have enough time to sit back and wait to see if Honda/Acura bumps the power up a bit for the 2005 or even 2006 model lines.

The Altima is a very strong contender. Its very spacious, and probably the best bang for the buck for straight line performance in a family sedan. Fit and finish, handling and reliability may not be qutie to the level of the TSX, but still pretty good. I especially like the interior and exterior tweaks Nissan made for 2005. But they are also becoming quite commonplace, possibly the belly button car of Japanese mid-size sedans, and its made in the US now (as opposed to Japan). But my Sentra was made in Mexico, so what the heck…

The Mazda 6, while winning lots of awards, gets a luke-warm reaction from me. The styling is nice, although a bit overdone (kinda boy-racer/ricer-ish). The package is nice. The value is decent. But the V6 engine is a Ford Duratec  and overall build quality and fit n’ finish may be questionable. If you want to autocross a family sedan, this car would be the ONE off the entire list. But compared to most of the others, the interior is actually quite cramped. The back seat for example didn’t feel much bigger than my Sentra.

The VW & Audi on the list are “nice” but I’m very weary of VW products. The Passat line is not nearly as bad as the Golf/Jetta platform for reliability but once bitten, twice shy. My first VW experience was not great.

I don’t know much about the new S40 and Legacy GT. I think both are new enough that I wouldn’t have even seen them at the auto show back in February. The 2005 S40 is all new, and looks very nice and has good specs (on paper at least), but… there is the issue with platform sharing with the Ford companies… I’m not sure if this new S40 is more Ford than Volvo or not. Remains to be seen. As for the Legacy GT, I sat in everything Subaru had at the show back in February and they had nothing of decent size really if you’re looking to progress larger than your typical “compact” sedan. However if the new Legacy is a bigger car, then I will have to check it out. AWD certainly has its appeal.

Other than that, I think that’s about it. The purchase is probably at least 1-1.5 years away so there’s still time to compare, analyze, test drive, etc. but I just thought I’d start some good discussion here.

(Heck, if Dan can post about every time he changes his oil, certainly I can talk about car shopping! ) :stuck_out_tongue: j/k

The new Legacy GT will also be turbocharged, if you didnt already know. I dont know if that really matter to your wife though. I really like the looks of the new TSX, they are way nicer than any other car on your list IMO, but i have never driven any of them so I cant comment on anything other than looks.

i drive the altima 2.5 standard and the mazda 6 v6 standard. i would WAY rather go with the mazda. the handeling is unbeleviable and the tranny is great too. the 4 cyl has enought power if you want something cheaper too. the v6 seemed overkill for that car. the new ford duratec are extremely reliably engines. i stress the NEW duratecs. they have been in european cars for 3-4 years now and there are no recals or complaints on the engines. the altima was nice but the fit and second class. the leather seemed vinaly and the carpet showed wear.

the acura is nice too. can’t coment on that. mazda acura or volvo would be my choice. also check out the saab 9-3. turbo power???

LOL… Actually I have a bit of a stigma about SAABs. When I was in university way back, one of my floor mates in Lister (the student residence) made a comment one day about SAABs in general that “only fags drive them…” And I thought about that, and thought to myself “yeah, they DO look kinda gay” (referring to some of the older Saab models) I’ve never been able to look at those cars (any of them) the same again!

However, I did notice that one of the recent one’s is essentially a re-skinned Subaru WRX. But the WRX and its twin are not on my list because of size mainly. The WRX is essentially a compact sedan.

Also, the SAAB is in the 50K range, is it not?

Nobody likes a smart ass!! lol :x
I almost missed that…

the 9-3 aero ( only model worth buying) starts around 39 large. lesser models start ar 30ish i beleive. they have come down in price recently.

i beleive the 9-2 is the WRX twin and the 9-3 is the bigger one. i’m guessing it is classed between the upper BMW 3 series and the lower 5 series

The TSX is a decent car with the 6 speed, but too stiff for a daily driver. It’s the kind of car that should be driven above the speed limit. A roots supercharger would help it alot.

My vote is for the TSX. I saw one with spinners the other day. I really like the whole look of the car especially the lights.

I can recommend a TL Dynamic after driving one. It would make a good daily driver if you can stand FWD.

I love the new TL. But the TL Dynamic is $42k+, isn’t it? That’s a bit out of the budget. I guess there’s always used. But if I was going to consider that price range, I’d have to strongly think about the G35 sedan as well. That would be a tough dilemma.

But I still really like the TSX… pending a test drive of course.

BTW, any chance knowing you would help me to get a better purchase price at West Side Acura.

It may help. Test drive both the TL and TSX if your considering an Acura. You already know my choice after driving both. The TSX is too hard edged but isn’t fast.

Jay if your a big fan of the TSX you really should check out the TL, dad and I took one for a rip 2 weeks ago and has a kick ass bodykit to it. I would seriously think about the move from Nissan to Acura for this ride.

MSRPs:

$34,800 (TSX) vs $41,800 (TL w/ dynamic).

$7500 (w/ GST) is a significant difference at the end of the day, and this is going to be the wifey’s car, not mine, afterall.

Hmmm…

What a coincidence. I just got the latest Car & Driver in the mail and they have a 4-way comparison of the A4 1.8T, the TSX, the S40 T5 and the Legacy GT. And the TSX took 1st place!
