Snowpocalypse '14-'15 - Now 13 Deaths

Should have gone. (Sorry I can’t help it.)

Would a heated driveway even help? Wouldn’t it just cause a frozen pond at the end of the driveway and/or a shallow igloo directly above the driveway?

Tonawanda currently has nothing but grass and leaves. How’s the snow after last nights rain??

I pretty sure about 20,000lbs of water has dripped off my roof so far. Probably another 80,000lbs to go.

Yeah i I gotta go rake leaves. Maybe I’ll just use the bagger on the lawnmower. #northtownproblems

Those north towns jokes and memes were funny the first 2-3 days

I actually really just raked my front yard though. Not even joking. Actually sweating. Was doing it in a t- shirt. It really is crazy how it’s two different worlds 10 miles apart.

btw

i live in the village of Depew and tow for the police department, I got called in to clear the streets Tuesday at 5, then once I got all the cars off the road I drove around and cleared driveways with my tractor. it was a lucrative storm for my business but now everyone’s pissed the police are telling them there’s a charge for towing there car. idk why people get mad when I tell them its not free for towing or snow removal, this is what I do for a living? they need to realize people aren’t out there working for free

I heard some mayor or whatever saying they would pay for towing. I forget who or what municipality.

I only cover Depew, buffalo I believe said they were paying for the city’s towing, everyone coming to pay there bill is telling us its n emergency and we should be doing it for free of change, the emts are the worst about complaining and paying the bill

I heard that some towing companies were also charging daily storage fees when people had no possible way to get their cars, is that true?

I’m going back into the office tomorrow. Off since Monday night. Got to drive again this morning for the first time since this all started and it actually felt kinda strange. Without going on and on, there’s some pics and some things I wanted to post. You may agree, or not, and that’s your right / prerogative.

First off, there’s been many complaints about many aspects of this event and I won’t go into them all. I think the one thing that is of most importance, which was brought up by who on here I forget, is personal responsibility and self reliance. While I’m not the only one who never really saw this one coming, I also believe that being able to have the internal “fight and perseverance” to deal with a situation, when it’s presented to an individual, makes the outcome.

I can specifically speak to the two people that were “trapped” in their cars, which resulted in their deaths. I’m not trying to make this a less tragic situation, I feel for their loved ones and families and it was horrible, but I also think it could’ve turned out differently. I think our society has become dependent on picking up the smart phone, calling someone for assistance, and then sitting back and waiting for something to happen. I can’t honestly think that they thought further after hanging up the phone and said “hey, it’s really, really bad out there and there’s a good chance no one may be able to find me or get to me. What do I need to do on my own to help myself.” I know the alternative can be pretty scary and not something I’d look forward to but others have done alot more with alot less and come out on top.

Two people I want to thank, and I know they will never see it on here, is my wife and 8 year old son. Long story short, we got buried (much like everyone else) and with conditions what they were, I knew getting ahold of someone with the needed equipment to dig us out was going to be a long shot at best. We weren’t in danger of starving or freezing to death by any means, but we could’ve been in our house a long, long time before someone was able to help out, especially being as busy as everyone was and with no one in particular who would put us on top of their “list”. They both helped me take on the task of digging out my truck and shoveling a 10’ x 125’ x 4-5’ deep path to the road. I don’t honestly know if I could’ve done it all without them. With some rough numbers someone posted on here I figured we moved somewhere in the neighborhood of 37,500 lbs. (a.k.a. 18.75 tons) of snow between me, my 95 lb wife, and 55 lb son. We were able to get out today and get to the store for the basics, and then some. My wife’s a city girl and has never been too keen on moving out to the sticks, but she showed me something I never thought she had in her… true grit. She never got hysterical, never complained, never pointed fingers, and never gave up on the task at hand. I honestly never thought she had it in her and I terribly underestimated her as a person.

This may have been the sweetest sight I’ve ever seen, right behind the birth of my son and my wife standing on the alter. Special thanks to John from B & B Blacktop in Angola. He was helping out a neighbor across the road and I actually followed him all the way to my house for about half a mile. He helped my get my wife’s Saturn un-buried and opened up the rest of the driveway we weren’t able to get done. He was reasonable with his charges and I was happy to give him a little extra for widening things out. I promise there’s another thank you coming your way. Mother of a front loader by the way.

I do want to thank all the people out there (police, fire, EMT’s, firemen, road crews, equipment operators, plow drivers, tow truck drivers, volunteers, national guard, and anyone else I might be forgetting) as I know they all worked some seriously long hours to help people out of a horrible situation. While some mistakes may have been made, and some tempers flared, in the end I think so many people stepped up and helped those in need…and that’s maybe the most important part of all this. I also learned to be over prepared and not to make decisions based on what the local weather forecasters predict. I’m not putting them on the hot seat, just saying I would’ve made some decisions a little differently had I known more up front.

I wouldn’t expect free towing? Hell, I’d be thankful someone didn’t blast my car into someone’s lawn with a loader or grind it into recyclables with a monster snow blower. Tow truck companies are supposed to be not for profits…right?

nice pics!!!

Someone do a siqq burnout next to all this snow and post it

just posting some pics i came across:

Every time I see those cloud pics, they never quite look real. That’s some awesome shit.

yes the cloud pics really are exceptional and those are among the best ones i’ve seen thus far.

I remember reading something years ago about how there was a deadly restaurant fire and there was a study done on how the people in the restaurant acted. They broke the people into two distinct groups.

The first group were people that took charge and despite locked emergency exits, helped others find a way out.

The second group were individuals that were so panicked or had no sense of urgency, that they just sat there frozen and did nothing to aid in their own survival.

I can see the two people that you mentioned being in the second group. They totally relied on someone else to save them.
