Snowpocalypse '14-'15 - Now 13 Deaths

I agree with you @1QIKZ, I saw a bunch of my neighbors who just shut themselves in their house and never came out to assess their situation. Hell, I walked 6 miles just to get gas so that I could help clear other driveways of the neighbors who were actually out there busting their ass trying to clear their driveway with shovels.

It sickens me to think that there are so many people who are dependent upon other people or just think they aren’t capable of doing something without even trying.

I cleared my driveway with an 8’ wide path right away. It is not a super long driveway, but not terribly short either. The loaders cleared a path up my street late day 1 and I was able to go check out the neighborhood. Only a few people had done anything. Day 2 the same. Day 3 the same. Most of the neighbors sat inside and waited for a plow to come dig them out. A couple even came and asked me who cleared out mine. I then ventured into South Buffalo to check on some people and places, EVERYONE was out digging. I should not have been on the road as it was a driving ban so I was super respectful of my speed around the thousands of people walking the streets. I ran groceries gas and beer into the heart of the storm and boy were people grateful.

Saw this the other day off rt20 on brompton rd in hamburg

Edit the pic…

Well Alexander is going to be flooded. Everything is inches from the road now and it’s up to houses. Still plenty of snow to melt to.

Fucking NY

Gov. Cuomo critical of National Weather Service, says New York building its own forecasting system

Coming soon, NY Weather Authority, another bunch of unelected and untouchable political patronage hacks making 6 figure salaries. The thruway authority did such a good job with the storm response, what with the stranded motorists and inability to simply close gates that were installed last year. Clearly we need another authority to deal just with the weather.

A few inches of water in my basement already. Sump couldn’t keep up. I had major issues last year that I thought I fixed, but had the foresight to clean the basement and put everything that wasn’t waterproof up high. The pump I borrowed wouldn’t work, so I just grabbed one at Lowes. As I was walking out, some guy said “Please tell me they have more!” Half a week of being shut in, the other half shoveling, and now I get to dry out a basement. I’m betting that I switch from coffee to beer before noon today.

I can’t wait to hear the excuses when the NY weather system fails to predict a somewhat unpredictable event.

Hack all the weather systems?

I figured it out…

Chinese hack U.S. weather systems, satellite network

Like most Americans, Cuomo and his team failed to read past the first two sentences.

Eh, whatever I don’t care weather (<- see what I did their(<-and there)) or not the NWS failed or not. It snowed, people got stuck, everyone survived…aside from about a dozen people. Move on.

All these people want to do is blame everyone else for why they weren’t prepared for this storm. All my neighbors who didn’t have snowblowers…didn’t go grocery shopping prior to the storm. Blame the weathermen! “I sat around watching TV for 12 hours, never once did they say we were going to get that much snow!” Meanwhile, I spent 8 clearing my basement and getting pumps from local stores and I’m prepared, even if it doesn’t flood.

How about instead of investing 18M into some stupid weather system that the government doesn’t need, you buy some of the equipment that was brought in from other states to clean up this mess.

Again, too many people are quick to blame others for their mishandling of preparation. Just like when their basements flood, they will blame someone else as to why their stuff got destroyed. Get off your ass and clean your basement out. Shovel the snow away from your house. Buy a pump from a store so you have a backup plan. Do something, anything!

If there is one thing I have seen from this storm is that there is very little accountability being put on people who weren’t prepared or didn’t try to improve their situation. Instead, we just keep getting more handouts from the government, particularly NYS and Cuomo.

Also, I have some lady walking back from the gas station with a bag full of cigs and a 12 pack who stopped and asked if I was interested in clearing here driveway. She said she didn’t have money, but would give me beer. It literally pissed me off and she knew it. I told her I was too busy helping others who were less fortunate.

edit- I don’t need the NWS to tell me that we will get 6 ft. instead of 3 ft. for me to prepare any differently. It’s the little thing inside me that says, “Ok, I need to get off my ass and do something to better my situation”

Throughout the whole storm, I was out for 2 hour shifts clearing my driveway. For the most part, I could leave my house if I needed to. I was never “trapped”. People just kept telling me, “We saw you working out there and saw your driveway was clear, we were jealous!” They just kept watching me from their window, in their pajamas.

Yeah, you’re right. 12 people dead, no big deal.

Yep, typical I’m lazy/unprepared/stupid who can I blame.

I don’t know the circumstances of all of them, I know one was a freak accident, and most were cardiac do to shoveling. How many of those cardiac scenarios were people that aren’t supposed to be doing that type of lifting as it is? It’s not New York’s fault they died. It’s unfortunate but, it can happen with 6" of snow or 6’ of snow.

Those same people who were just sayin “Eh, I’m not going to shovel my roof, I’ll just file a homeowners claim!” are the same ones that were too cheap to buy better insurance…the insurance that actually covered collapse due to weight of snow/ice.

I never blamed NY State… Just saying, deaths are nothing to shake off.

I only shoveled off the most critical parts of it as I didn’t want to be a cardiac statistic. I did go look at my policy thanks to your post and as I had assumed I am covered for collapse/damage from snow load.

Thanks for that post BTW.

No problem, glad to help out where I can!

But between heart attacks and people like this lady who would rather curl up in her car and write her goodbyes than walk to warm buildings 100 feet away I’m not sure how much “the gubment” can do to help.
