Sold Car Help?

Whats a little tax fraud between strangers who are already disputing money?

not when it’s documented but i’m sure they are not goona looking into it for a $1500 car.

^ yes but he would be helping the buyer with tax evasion. and especially after all the bullshit he’s already tried to pull it seems like he’s lining you up to get fucked over.

I’ve written down receipts for plenty of strangers and had plenty write them down for me. Of course these were all in person cash transactions so that’s a lot different. No way I’d do it on a PayPal traceable transaction with some buyer who’s being an ass.

It’s sad how much money states make on car sales tax… Biggest scam ever… And I aggre dont write less on the price of the car.

I do agree with you guys.

It’s all over a 2000 Subaru Impreza.

I never sold a vehicle online, and I never sold to a buyer whom didn’t come and look at the vehicle and pay cash.

I was splitting the damn shipping just because he was bitching about how he has to help his family blah blah.

I finally told him it’s either that or he can pay me re-marketing fees, deposit, paypal fees and such.

At the end of the day it’s a learning experience and im helping my father.

I would strongly advise you NOT to put a lesser value on the receipt. When things are documented online and already getting sketchy, don’t risk throwing yourself under the bus to save him a few bucks. If he really wants a lower value he can forge a new receipt to give to the DMV since they barely glance at them anyway for older cars, not that I’ve ever known anyone who’s done that of course. A person-person cash transaction would be completely different.

you are correct, thanks guys for the insight. It’s not worth the class B misdemeanor attached to it.

The buyer was being an ass. And yes the car is 12 years old and i don’t think it’s worth what KBB says it is regardless- body and rust damage etc.

So he is having a driver come pick it up tomorrow.

What if the vehicle breaks down on the way back? I never drove it that long and the buyer knows it needs work (power steering and clutch).

Is this some professional service? You didn’t arrange it did you? The car shouldn’t leave your driveway unless you have something in writing stating that once it does leave your driveway the deal is complete. He 100% owns the car and anything that happens from that moment isn’t your problem.

I’m afraid to ask, but whose insurance and plates is it traveling on tomorrow?

Thank you for the quick reply. He said he found a driver that is a professional. . He made all the arrangements, including where it’s going to and who is picking it up.

Well the vehicle is off my insurance and I have no plates for it (so liability wise not me).

I did specify in the bill of sale it’s “as is, where is”, “sight unseen”. Basically the second it’s out of my driveway, I’m done. It’s not spelt out but implied.

^ hahaha that made me LOL.

But seriously?

What a clusterfuck over a $3000 car. CL can be such a pain in the ass sometimes.

I do agree. And this was all on a forum.

I will NEVER sell a car online again. It’s simply a headache with a buyer whom is unreasonable. I offered to pick him up from the airport, hell he’s only in NYC.

Yeah if it’s a niche car that’s hard to sell jumping through hoops like this can be worth it, but for an ordinary car cash and carry is the name of the game.

Glad to hear it’s not traveling on your plates and insurance. Aside from stating it’s sold as is, all private party vehicle sales are as-is. It’s NY state law. I’d still try to get an email from the guy where he agrees that once it leaves your driveway it’s his problem. Probably not totally needed, but if something happens and he starts hassling you sending that email back to him may shut him up pretty quickly.

Yes, it was a niche car for sure and I could’ve sold locally but I’ve had my fair share of craigslist time wasters.

I did state it was “sight unseen” and I added in there he could have came at any point to see the vehicle, and even have a mechanic look at it prior to pickup.

i added in the bill of sale that when it leaves my property it’s his obligation and liability.

This is dumb. One bad experience should not stop you from using the Internet. Online is always a great option. Protect yourself…

ABC. Always Be Closing. You want to buy my car but don’t want to ship it or fly to get it…FUCK OFF. It is up to them to determine if $3k is worth it. Not you.

Don’t ever feel bad for the buyer. If they can’t afford it and don’t have the means then they should not be looking. It will bite you in the end if you become part of the problem. Come get it and pay me. That is the extent of your involvement. If you choose to do more then it is on your time and money.

There are people buying and selling everyday. Tell the guy it is not the car for him if it becomes a dick dance. Another buyer will come along.

Customer satisfaction is important. But, if they expect you to bend over backwards and waste time, effort, money…fuck them. Just tell him you will lower the price and sell local.

On at least 5 seperate occasions over the past 7 years I had Craigslist low ballers call crying the price was too high. The guy I was selling it for told me to raise the price…I didn’t believe it work but it did, I couldn’t believe it. I sold a 2002 Chevy 2500 for 9.5k after I raised it from 9.3k. Not a huge increase but my buddy told the guy “You should have bought it 2 weeks ago.”

Good luck getting it figured out. I realize these are moot points to the OP now…but hey, live and learn.

Yeah that insight does help. i seriously had people on craigslist sometimes make appointments and not show. For those whom did show made seriously lowball offers. To which, I said please just leave my property. They offered seriously insulting prices, but a lot of people want something for nothing i’ve seen.

I guess this whole experience will help me for the next time. And I agree business is business. It’s not like you can do this crap at a dealer, try to back out after you paid for a vehicle.

I’m out $125 but it’s a lesson learned and it’s easier then dealing with the scum from craigslist. Some guy had the nerve to say oh you should just junk it. I’m like “it’s sure better then what you pulled up in”… People are expecting perfection- from a 12 year old Subaru? No.

It’s been a while since I’ve sold a car but in the past I always had good luck with autotrader. Yeah, it’s not free like CL, but what’s $25-$35 if it sells the car.
