soo.. she blew up tonight..

yeah soo my car blew up on the 401 2nite… going east right before the keele exit :frowning: I was just cuising at 110… then out of no where…

bang!.. and then a cloud of smoke from behind… and some bits and peices…

soo she’s towed back home now…

I don’t know what it is.
but just looking at the engine bay and under the car in the dark…
nothing seems to be missing, or hole or anything like that…

I checked the oil lvl… and it’s still at max… which means… my rings are still instact… since no oil is lost!!!
when I try to start the car… sometimes it won’t start…
but sometimes it start … turn over a bit. and die again…

when it does start… for a bit…
there’s sometimes a big “pop” sound comming out of the exhaust… like back fire…

is it possible to have the turbo blow up

or if the cat to melt ?

in both situations where it restricts air to come out of the exhaust
will that not allow the car to start up at all b/c of the restriction?

can a blocked exhaust system caused the car to not start b/c of the back pressure?

I’ll be dismantling the exhaust section tmr morning

ed

your cat sounds like it’s collapsed… are you using the NA cat with a turbo and are you running a bit rich? thats a good way to turn a ceramic monolith cat into a block of slag… and yes a blocked cat will act like the enigne is running on 2 cylinders or less no power, barely starts. the bang is probably the pressure leaking by once enough has built up… undo the two bolts holding the cat in place let it drop out of the way and start the car You’ll know right away if it’s the cat by the fact that the car will start and flow properly

compression test the engine to make sure it’s still fine and go from there.

I am running a high flow magnaflow cat…
and turbo and a bit running rich…

I hope that this is the problem…
something did fly out from under the car. I just don’t know from where. could be from the exhaust

I just went out and checked again…
I see oil present infront bottom of the transmission case…

if it is the cat… what kind of cat to you recommend for a turboed/running riched car?

ed

you know what’s funny… last time I did a test… I Was getting ~140 on all cylinders…
and that was a year ago…

oil may be a 2nd problem or may be the problem, but it takes a few min. of time to check to see if it’s the cat… if not then the oil leak may be indicitive of a larger, more… terminal… issue.

Pull the piping from the turbo (intake and exhaust) and see what condition the turbo is in…
If pieces came out of your exhaust and the turbo is all one piece then it had to be the cat.

Btw I have my original CA18DET turbo just lying here, it needs seals but everything else is fine.

sorry to hear about the bad luck ed.

link me up on msn, i may bebale to get a motor for you in our next shipment.

well I went at it this morning…

soo far… I’ve found the number 3 spark wire burned and the cap bolt compltetly shreeded off inside the rotor

soo the cap didn’t turn when I tried to turn on the ignition…

I check the spark plugs… it’s just charcoal covered w/ gas… the gas probably from me trying to start the car w/ no spark…

I’ll be doing a compression test in a bit… and getting a new cap and rotor…
I hope the car didn’t detonate…

I still can’t figure out what was flying behind the car
after compression… going to take out the turbo…

a buddy of mine with a dsm… same thing happen to him, car took a sh1t on the highway… turned out he snapped the exhaust cam shaft in half

If your spark plugs look to be all there then you shouldnt have experienced detonation. Besides thats very unlikely at cruising.

On the other hand, if your spark plugs are chunky and missing pieces then I would have to say something let go and its serious.

It wasnt knocking was it?

no knocking

engine fixed.

what was problem??

turns out that chunk of stuff flying out behind my car was the cat’s internal
the boom was a huge back fire and the smoke was associated with it

soo the rotor had one screw holding it inside the cap…
the screw came loose and bascially stoped the the rotor from turning… = no spark

soo as I was cursing… it fell off , = no spark = lots of gas

gas made it to the cat… = back fire boom…

but now I noticed oil comming out between the tranny and the engine :expressionless:

but still runs

:expressionless:
