speakers cutting out

not much time to explain this bc i gtg to work but heres a quick explaination.
-setup-
Pioneer Deck: DEH-P5900IB
Polk db651’s all around
amp: Polk Audio MOMO C500.1
2 Rockford Fosgate Punch P1 subs

for some reason when i turn up the volume to a normal listening level the speakers begin just cutting in and out at a normal rate, like there is one frequency in the song which they are unable to handle each time. when i turn it down it sounds fine, but when i turn it all the way up there is no cut out, but everything has become wicked distorted. turned the subs off via the deck and it still did this. no clue if its a loose connection, but dont wanna go taking door panels and stuff apart to check when the weather is like this. any ideas?
of course everything starts to wrong just before i put her in the garage for the winter.

All the speakers cut out, or just the subs? (If its just subs)If you have the amp wired at too low of ohms, once it gets some power, it will go into protect. If its all the speakers, it most likely the deck, or the wiring from the deck. Does the deck have an internal amp, or a “loud” setting? Try shutting that off if it does.

Do all the speakers cut out the same time? Probably a bad speaker or speaker wire shorting out.

Sounds like a shorted wire to me as well…

if any wires were chaffing against anything mihgt have gotten cut into a bit

Also are the Polks going thru an amp?..

And its possible the desk is having issues produecing the power output when the volume is turned up…

I’m betting on a bad speaker.

I wouldent think 1 speaker would cause the whole system to short thou?

Not only 1 speaker, but 1 speaker wire can cause every speaker in the car to shut off. What happens is that the wire shorts to ground (or to the other wire) and that causes the internal amp in the deck to go into protect mode. Rarely does the deck ever say anything, it just shuts off all sound. But going by the fact that they only do it at high volumes, I would say that the internal amp on the deck is starting to go. How high do you have the bass/treble? high bass settings with a speaker that can handle more power than the deck can produce can cause the internal amp on the deck to “overwork” and damage itself. Normally it is protected by an automatic shutdown (protect) but it doesnt always work.
Just my .02.

Sometimes at high volumes the voice coil in the speaker can short and trip the deck into “safe mode”. One way to test it is to connect a multimeter to the speaker and watch the resistance change as you carefully push the speaker cone in/out. You can also fade/balance the speakers so you play one at a time and see which one makes the system cut out.

my coupe cut out all the time. it was a bad ground. the wire in the loom had been pinched.

Same thing with my hatch. i said fuck it and ran my own wires for everything. MUCH better. plus the oem wires arnt good enough for polk momo’s. theres a couple threads on nico about it. polk/R.fosgate and kenwood sound better with a simple wire upgrade.

I think shady has my polk momos… idk where they went :’(

FUUU SONY DECKS!

Pioneer premier FTW.

sounds like the amp is clipping or you have a voice coil that is grounding out with distortion. try re tuning the amp that runs the speakers. what i would say is turn the amp all the way down and the deck to about 75-80% vol. then slowly turn up the amp untill the speakers start to distort then turn back just a little bit. that should make sure the amps not gained to high. also check the voltage on the amp when it cuts out. make sure its not a bad ground or a low voltage drop. if it still does it i would check the speaker connections at the amp for a short to ground. if you need help just pm me and i can help you out.

If it still cuts out after he turns the sub off via the deck, I wouldn’t think it would be related. Unless he’s running a mono amp to all 4 speakers.

woah lots of stuff to look at and im buzzed right now after watchin the yanks with a good amount of beers… will try to answer some ?s: didnt run the speakers thru the amp, all speakers cut out at the same time when at normal volume on certain freqs. doesnt matter if i turn the subs on or off with the deck, nor does it matter how Eq i set it at (even set at flat and natural it does it), when turned all the way up they dont cut out at all but wiiiiiicked distortion… ive been running this setup for over a yr now w/o any probs until now which is y im confused

Well if you run the speakers loud and get distortion, you’re going to kill those speakers fairly quick :lol

sounds like the problem is in the headunit itself

ok, now i’ve completely removed the subs/amp from the equation… and from my car. still have all four speakers cutting out simultaneously once i pass a certain volume. then cranked (which i never do anymore except to test this) it’s all distored but they no longer cut out. should i check for frayed wires. i know with my car nissan decided to run the wire harness directly above the front drivers-side wheel, and with bigger rims you get some rubbing. i did the whole WIRE TUCK thing

but was wondering if somehow maybe a wire in there got frayed and that could be my problem. taking the rims all off soon to get new rubber so i’ll have a chance to take a look at it. hopefully i’m on the right track. any thoughts?

I dont think any speaker wires run above the wheels though. If I were you I’d just rewire the speakers completely and take all that factory amps out.

This.

Isnt too difficult to rewire the speakers in a vehicle, takes some time thou. Had to run all new wires for the speakers in the Z as the factory amp uses proprietary connections in the back of the headunit and into the amps in the front and back of the car. Was 10x easier to just run new wires to all the speakers.

I hear steve will do all sorts of crazy wiring work if you give him a few lines to snort of a cheap hookers ass.

i’d just require the whole thing. my car has awesome factory wiring, but i put in all new wiring for my whole setup. lmk if u need help

oh, also. when i’m at a red light idling, the speakers decide to cut out more often, and i have to turn it down even more than i did before in order to stop it from doing that, or if i rev the engine it makes it stop doing that at its normal volume. sucks because time is one thing i am really short of, plus i need the car on the road everyday to get to work so i cant really have it apart. this sucks
