Sprung vs. Unsprung clutches.

Looking at buying a clutch in the near future after a few other purchases. I’ve just started doing my research and I think I understand the difference. This is a daily driver, that will see a few drags a month, but other than that I don’t like launching hard. I want something relatively smooth and clutch pedal effort isn’t too much of an issue I don’t think.

Are sprung clutches really as notorious and people say for breaking the springs?

Is the unsprung pedal effort that difficult?

If anyone has either a sprung or unsprung and would share their likes/dislikes that would be awesome. Or better yet taking me for a ride  gas $ included of course. I’m probably going to see somewhere in the 250-300 hp range as well, but that doesn’t matter too much.

the pedal weight is not affected by sprung or unsprung, it means whether or not the friction disc is connected directly to the input spline reciever or if it has some compliance. Clamp load is what affects pedal pressure.

For your scenario, i would not get an unsprung clutch.

for what its worth, i HATE my unsprung clutch. if you plan to drive this car on the street i’d definitly stay sprung

What do you hate about it? Is it difficult to engage smoothly?

stop and go, it sucks lol its not smooth at all because its like an on/off switch. don’t get me wrong at the track its awesome, but for driving around town its not worth it. i’ll be going back to a sprung in the near future

^^^ Jay you also have a 6-Puck, so that’s going to play into the harshness as well.

If you plan on driving it daily, go with sprung. This will be going into the Z in a few weeks:

ive never heard of a good clutch loosing its springs

oh i’m not denying that haha but i’ve ridin in sprung 6pucks before and they are no where as rough as my unsprung.

I would never drive an unsprung on the street…

i LOVE my rps sprung clutch…never loses grip, can take a beating (not that i deliver it, but it can if i wanted to…), and is soooooo smoothe

yea, unsprung clutches suck for the street; even with the HP that I’m going to be making I’m sticking with sprung disks

I have a Honda with an unsprung 6 puck. Its kinda sucks, but Im use to it by now.

I urge you to go with sprung

i disagree. I got a SPEC stage 4 in my car, unsprung 6 puck. I learned to drive on it and havent had any problems driving it on the street. I can slip it and everything, its not an “on/off switch”. But then again this is a V8 with a hydrolic clutch.

yea theres alot of variables. i also have a 9 lb flywheel that don’t help either

True, but I’m just going with a Street Twin; for the price of a Stage 4 Spec with aluminum Flywheel; for another $200 I can have the ST with the adjustable Slave and not have to worry about slipping with :snky: HP

hmm…my probe had a sprung clutch…shifted smoooth as hell. I’ve never driven the unsprung so I dont really know.

an unsprung clutch will also chatter a lot. Sprun would be much quiter.

I have been very happy with my unsprung clutch. It’s not any louder than the rest of the car

unsprung clutches usually will wear out faster if driven on the street becuse of increased clamping force which make you slip it a lot more if u want a smooth take off but u caouls always just do a burn out at every light and stop sign ur at

This was my clutch after some highway pulls with Scott. (ACT2600 w/ 500ish miles on it  )

even after that…I still recommend sprung. I still run a sprung clutch w/ huge clamping force and a very stiff pedal. (ask newman)
