Whats the differences? v.clutchs

Between a 4 puck and a 6 puck clutch, both sprung in terms of driving? I know its a broad topic but any info is helpful.

I think the 4 puck is harsher than the 6puck in terms of engagement

Thats what I’ve read. I just want to know how bad it really is. 6 puck is on back order for my car, but I can snag a 4 puck. Just kind of wondering how bad a 4 puck would really be.

which one is rated for more power and what are your goals?

May be apples to oranges here but I drove a 450 whp evo with an ACT 4 puck HD, and could not tell much of a difference in grip over my STi’s 6 puck.

unsprung ftw

A lot depends on the rest of what you have. How heavy the flywheel is, how strong the PP is, what the clutch friction surface is made of. By it’s nature the unsprung clutch will feel like it’s grabbing more. You’ll also have more road feel too. There won’t be as much dampening at speed either.

On my one car the flywheel is 7lbs and I have the Sach’s MFX-200 twin disk setup. It’s very grabby, there’s no slipping it whatsoever. It’s either on or off. Driving it takes some technique.

On the other car I have a heavier flywheel and heavier midplate in the clutch pack(same clutch) and it’s a lot more forgiving.

Both hold quite well.

If you’re doing a lot of city driving my suggestion would be to remain srung. If it’s a purpose built car then the choice is yours.

depending on hold capacity of the clutch it could be like a friggin on off switch… that with a lightened flywheel… hello to learning to drive again

I wouldn’t recommend a puck style (especially unsprung) for anything driven regularly. Too unfriendly. You’ll look like a total fool trying to inch into that parking spot.

Indeed it is.

4 puck sintered iron disc for the boooooooooo

if you cant daily drive a 6 puck sprung you need to grow some balls, its not that unmanageable. A 3 puck unsprung on the other hand, is a mofo. Ive had both

Yeah 6 puck sprung isn’t that bad. Just a bit more practice is needed when you first start driving with it. I remember stalling my car out a couple times when I first got it.

I’d imagine that once you get used to the four puck it’ll be the same. You won’t want to get stuck in a traffic jam, but other then that, I can’t see it being that difficult to use once you get used to it.

6 puck sprung is easy as pie. GOD i wish i could go back to 4 puck unsprung. iron unsprung isn’t fun, but thats still easy to drive. its just not as smooth

Thanks for all the advice guys. I’ll be on a stock weight flywheel. I know the clutch setup I’m using is going to be way overkill, but I don’t see the need change a clutch every time I up the power.

have fun and stay off the grass

i miss my 6 puck:sad: clutch and flywheel is such a nice upgrade. i cant wait to do it in the mazda

4 puck sprung shouldn’t be too bad. Then again, I LOVE a clutch with a very positive engagement.

i’ll never own an unsprung clutch again, fwiw

i’ve also heard that the 4 puck engages harder than a 6 puck if both are sprung, i have a 6 puck sprung Spec and it drives nice once you get used to the engagement.
