sr smokes at idle and high revs sometimes

So I’ve been having this problem ever since i went to a thicker oil this one time and accidentally overfilled the motor oil. Causing the engine to burn it off.

Since then I’ve done 2 oil changes. And my car smokes a little at idle sometimes, and the last couple track events i had this season, i was told my car burned oil around the track.

Now, i don’t have that catch can thingy that comes stock with sr’s, could that be the only issue. Or am i looking at a serious problem. Like head gasket or leaking valve seals or something?

Could the pcv valve just be fucked, and I need a new one?

You need a compression test. That will tell you a lot.

as for your pcv valve, unscrew it. While it is running at idle, there should be a hissing sound going through it. This is vacuum from the manifold. This is telling you its not clogged.

or, take off the pcv valve and shake it. if the check valve is bouncing around in there, its fine.

Make sure your using a high performance synthetic, shitty oils will break down easier causing it to smoke.

perhaps your turbo is fudged and ur oil is burning there, coming out your exhaust

always run mobil1 synthetic, 10w30- it works the best for sr20s.

I would still put my money on your turbo, cuz its very rare that sr20s consume oil.

Have you got any oil in the fmic pipes ? exhaust ?

I’ve got a little coat of oil in the exhaust.

I’ve also been hearing some weird noises from the exhaust side of the engine, for couple months. Very slight but its there. Its so quiet, that i can’t determine if its the turbo or what. But today when is started the car, i could hear some background noise outta the exhaust pipes. I m thinking my turbo is fucked up. It sounded like a whoosing sound.

What you guys think?

id say turbo then…probably the bearing noise, or the fins hitting sidewalls…

if your feeling crazy grab a head gasket/headstuds…i cant remember if you have a fmic. you can push 350whp all day.

What kind of tire life you get outta something nice like a 235-255 federal in the rear, with your power? I know those normal tires you run only last u like 5-8 laps.

check your turbo. i always ran 5w40 in my sr felt way better with the thinner oil.

dont overlook the pcv valve like you said… besides its cheap so change that while ur at it…and look into a catch can

Yea i’ve been slacking on looking at the car, as its cold as shit in garage. But I plan on running a catch can in the summer and replacing the catchcan. I m gonna do a compression test sometime this week to make sure its not the engine block itself.

Hopefully its just the turbo.
