Steering wheel won't come off!!!

Hey guys, i’ve got a sparco hub with a nardi wheel sitting at home and i want to install it. I looked up DIY instructions on how to do this and it sounds like a piece of cake…so i took the big nut in the middle off and the steering wheel should pop right off with a small amount of force…i tried using a puller to pop it off but it wouldn’t budge at ALL…it just bent the steel plate attatched to the wheel itself…we tried heating it up, WD40, everything!!!..are there any tricks that im not aware of? how do you take this bloody thing off!!

P.S This is for an s13

Did you try to use a steering wheel puller or a generic puller? If not try to rent a steering wheel puller. Mine was difficult to get off at first, what I did was thread the large nut a couple turns so there is some play and started pulling on each corner of the wheel. After 5 hard pulls it popped free. I put the nut on so I did not go flying into the back seat when it came free.

i’ve tried that so many times…i even got two people to pull as hard as they could and it won’t even wiggle…i know for a fact that the wheel hasen’t came off in 18 years so…it’s in there. Where can i rent this puller?

get a plastic or rubber mallet and smash it from behind. thats waht i did.

i used a bondo rubber body mallet

just smash the wheel from behind at different spots?

if you really don’t care about the steering wheel and just want the damn thing off, you could try to drill a small hole (maybe 1/16"?) into the steering wheel flush against one of the splines for the shaft, being careful not to damage any of the shaft splines. when you drill this small hole it might be enough to relieve a bulk of the preloaded stress that the splines are exerting on the steering wheel. just a thought…mine came off with a few hard pulls by hand with my foot braced against the dash though.

if you can get a good enough swing in that space though go for the rubber mallet route and whack the shit out of the backside, making sure you still have the nut on but with some threads showing so you don’t kill yourself or anything else in the car like jamesS said.

just smash it…

Call Partsource or CDN Tire to see if they rent out steering wheel pullers. I was under the impression they did.

My old s13 was a bitch to take off too, what I did was put the nut you removed to remove the steering wheel on the last few threads. Then did a combination of smashing it from behind and wiggling it left and right violently lol in a pulling motion towards you.

I kept the nut there so when it “pops” off I don’t knock myself the f%^k out haha. good luck and have fun with that.

HAHAHA Agent…alright guys, sounds like im gunna beat the #$%& our of it tonight…i just wanted to make sure there isn’t a bolt or nut or something holding it back…Thank you all for your input!!
