Which would you rather have, the STi or the EVO? And Why?
After this year of school I am thinking about getting rid of the Cobalt and picking up one of these two cars. I like the Cobalt a lot, but I do a lot of winter driving (ski trips) and the Cobalt sucks in deep snow due to it being rather low to the ground and FWD. I have Blizzak snows for it which help a lot, but it’s still…well…boring.
I personally am leaning more towards the Lancer but I am curious as to what you clowns think.
Evolution, hands down…However, if you aren’t really going to mod it I’d say it’s a toss up because most of the opinions you are going to get towards the Evolution is that it’s a better bang for the buck mods wise. STI’s I can imagine are 100% fine if left alone.
I like the Evolution a lot better looks and performance-wise though. Pete’s '06 Evolution RS is the base model I guess you can say, with the non-power locks, non-power windows, and the shittiest radio I’ve ever experienced :lol…but it doesn’t feel/look one bit “cheap” as you put it.
Also, are you saying brand new Evo or STI? or used?
Evo without a doubt. Do not buy an STI unless you want it to blow up on you. on this forum alone there is prolly 5 or 6 STI’s that have blown up. I can explain to you how much of a POS i feel they are.
STi: EJ’s are an expensive build to make truly reliable at their limits, 6MT is a solid gearbox, R180’s have some quirks now and then, good brakes, some issues with rear suspension, interior much nicer that mitsu, Cruise.
Evo: 8/9 4G63 or X 4B11 are bombproof to 500whp in stock rev limit, clutches weak but for reasons, 6MT gearbox(MR) has guide issues until built, 5MT a good box, good brakes, some transfercase issues(improperly shimmed ring and pinions from factory, cheap interior(except MR recaros), no cruise(except X).
Evo has much better turn in, pedal position and feel is much better. Steering feedback is sharper than the STi, as well as stock for stock suspension response.
When buying used, a run hard/put away wet Evo 8/9 can cost substaintially more to fix than an exqually abused Sti. While an average blown Sti motor build can run around 3-5K, rebuilding an Evo drivetrain can get a few grand beyond that with ease. Evo’s have their good and bad drivetrain noises.
If I have my pick between the two cars, for dirt or track build, a solid and maintained Evo 9 RS is about as good as it gets between the chassis.
My brother is planning on getting an STi within the next year… :Idiots
Make fun of me all you want, but deep down I really want a Toyota Tacoma…V6 M/T extended cab 4x4. The X-Runner is sweet but not practical for what I would use it for.
It really depends on what you can afford. Sti’s can be had for cheaper than Evo’s but with either car you have to be very careful of abuse.
If I had not previously owned Subaru’s and had a decent budget, I would go for the Evo.
It also depends on what you want to do with the car. 5spd is better in a straight line but a 6spd will keep your revs up for bombing out of corners.:thumbup
