swap a lsj (cobalt supercharge motor) into a 97 z24?

im not domestic builder so im just having a thought for a friend. we were thinking about swaping a lsj (the engine that comes in the supercharged cobalts and saturn redlines) and seeing if it will swap into a 97 z24?

has any one else did any research on this motor swap and looked into if it would work? i dont know what to look for tried google but really dont know the j body terms… so if anyone else has any info on this swap it would be great

That would be a cool little project!

I don’t see why not.

Wouldn’t passing inspection be an issue?

when you swap motors it has to be from a newer vehicle. as long as all the emissions stuff is hooked up and the ECU works through the scan port it shouldnt be a problem.

Anything is possible with some fabrication.

well im not looking to cut frames to make the bitch fit im just lookin to replace the shitty oil leakin z24 engine with the new supercharged one they put in the cobalts and ions

rebuild the z24 and supercharge it.

probably cost A LOT less money with A LOT less downtime

im not really into the rebuild thing. im a honda kid ha and this is for a girl lmao. i thought it would be easier to take the engine out and put a new one in

How is being a “Honda kid” an excuse?

On a side note… I had an 01 z24 before and it was a bigger POS than my Neon, it was literally falling apart. Kinda glad the girl leaving Wendys totalled it.

even if you paid some one to rebuild it it would be cheaper. or buy a junk yard engine for 300 bucks.

well she has the money and asked me abouta swap and working at goodyear i studied the 2.2 ecotec supercharge and wondered if it would swap in. i tried doin research but came up with nothin

I didn’t read the thread but I just wanted to tell you there is a thread with this swap completed on redlineforums.com It’s a couple years old but still should be there. Either way good luck.

i think the last year of the previous body style cavalier (same as 97 i think) came with the regular ecotec. i bet with a combination of parts from that year and the newer LSJ stuff, it should be a bolt together.

brian

well im pretty sure the 97 cav did have the ecotec and the lsj is basically a ecotec with a charger on it i just wanna know that it will fit 100% befor she gets crap for it

LOL

cool project! hope ya go through with it

The LSJ is an Ecotec engine which the 2002+ j-bodies actually came with from the factory… granted the LSJ is not the exact same but physically it will fit in the car and has been done before… however I personally would not recommend it. The 97 does not have an Ecotec engine in it, it’s a 2.4 liter LD9 quad 4 engine.

It’s a ton of work as the mounts need to be custom, tranny needs to be swapped as well and the entire engine and harness need to be swapped. On top of that the BCM (body control module) will not work in conjunction with the LSJ so a custom dash would be necessary with aftermarket guages etc.

The 2.4 engine that is in the car now can be mildly built and supercharged quite cheaply with the GM Performance M45 kit… it’s around $1500 for the kit new now and will net her about 220 or so whp which is what a stock LSJ puts down anyways.

Hope i’ve helped…

^ u are the man that helped a shit load ill just tell her shes crazy and tell her to fix the oil leak she has now ha

I would agree about using the supercharger kit rather than swapping the LSJ - though adding the supercharger kit from GM isn’t completely straighforward. The kit was designed for the 2000+ non-EGR models, rather than the one you have in the '97. Doesn’t mean it can’t be done, just a little harder than the “plug and play” it would be if it’s a 2000-2001.

And in any case, iff you’re going to swap in an EcoTec - why the LSJ vs. the turbo LNF?
