So find a similar optioned/mileage, same model year Toyota or Honda, look at the price difference and do the math to see how far you need to drive the VW for the increased MPG to make up the difference in purchase price.

Let’s say you get a Civic that gets 30mpg for 2000 less than a diesel getting a generous 55mpg. It would take 40,000 miles to make up the cost with current prices.
