The Be All-End All Religion Debate Thread! version.ON-Topic

I see organized religion as a vice to control the weak that need to depend on something rather than depending on themselves.

Looking up to something that has never been proven to exist and is derived from a book never been proven factual

be like having a religion based souly on Harry Potter, you cant believe everything you read.

thats called Telephone

 x2

Really I don’t see a point to this. I can’t prove the existance of God in a way that you will believe and you can’t disprove the existance of God. It’s as simple as that.

There is however a very real answer to these questions. We exist and therefore there has to be some explanation of how the universe came to be.

Anybody that believes in science and evolution has to admit that while they might have a theory as to how part of creation might have occured, they actually have to admit that they really don’t know how the universe came to be.

If our existance is something we can’t explain and understand and we have to say “I don’t know” then why is it more farfetched to believe that God created the universe than to say that space dust was just somehow someway there and for some reason self combusted into me.

You started this thread just to beat your “I’m too smart for religion” drum. Well I have met numerous Christians who are smarter than you and I’m sure you have probably come across an atheist or two that has a higher IQ than me. So what!!!

It’s funny that most atheists love to waste time trying to disprove God, why waste your time on something you don’t believe in?? How often do people start threads saying lets discuss santa clause. I don’t even think it’s that most atheists don’t believe it is that they are hostile towards God because God’s word testifies that what they love is evil and they know it so they fool themselves by trying to think God isn’t real.

Personally I have seen enough evidence in my own experiences and from the experiences of others I know personally to believe that there is a God and that Christianity is true.

I’m not atheist…i believe there is a higher power, but…i think religion is bullshit & i think that everyones story weither it be chrstians, buddists, islamic, etc…are just that…stories.

I also beleive that everyone’s god/higher power no matter what religion you follow…is the same god/higher power

the point is…

yea, there really is no point, but it is fun to argue at work on a Friday about something that people have argued about for 2000 years.

Nope, we really do not know how everything started. But I can believe stuff just forming easier than some god creating everything.

:kekegay:

Truth…

Its funny how much this is debated in general. Like people wanting to take “under god” out of the pledge and taking god out of court room swearings. If people go to such efforts for somehting that they think is so untrue…that just proves how ‘true’ it really might be.

I got “saved” probably 6 or 7 years ago now. Good buddy of mine brought me to church and then I joined the church band that i was in for about 3 years. We traveled all over the tri-state area to play different events…and i’ll tell you what, when you see how this effects people, its hard not to believe its real.

I was waiting for you to join us…

the burden of proof (in my mind) does not lie on people to disprove that god exists. I believe the burden of proof if on those that do believe to prove (or at least give some sort of tangible evidence) that god does exist.

Just because science doesnt have a particularly compelling explanation for how we came to be does not by default make it fact that the standard judeo-christian tale of creationism is truth. Just because there isnt a BETTER explanation in now way lends any credibility to YOUR explanation. I think random space dust coming together is about as hard to believe as some omnipotent being just deciding to up and create us in his own image for his own viewing pleasure. Therefore I dont put much faith in either of them. There is no real good explanation, therefore I dont feel passionately about any of them. Its ok to just not know. There is nothing compelling you to just pick the most feasable explanation and jump in head first to believing it just because its slightly more feasable explanation.

So what indeed? I’m not beating any drum. Just calling it like I see it.

We dont start threads about Santa Claus because reasonable adults dont believe that Santa is real. And we dont waste time trying to disprove god, we waste time trying to figure out what the hell about religion is so compelling that it makes otherwise rational intellectuals buy in to its storybook musings.

As far as me being hostile because what I love god thinks is bad, thats just funny. Pat Robertson calls for assasinations, priests molest kids left and right, everyone from the KKK to Hitler to Bush wrap themselves in christianity. THe inquisition, burnings at the stake, the crusades, the holocaust, israel/palestine/the balkans/india-pakistan/Iraq-Iran… more people have been killed in the name of religion than all other murders combined. I like porn and pot, I’ve never killed anyone. So please get off that moral high horse. Religion does NOT make one moral.

Personally I have seen enough evidence in my own experiences and from the experiences of others I know personally to believe that there is a God and that Christianity is true.

Well whatever works for you, but I sure as shit havent had any such experiences.

I dont want child moleters to be teachers, but that doesnt mean that child molesters are really ok (please excuse me for analogizing religion with child molesters, it was the first thing that popped into my head). This nation needs a secular government. A non-secular government is by default bias. Christians have no problem putting up the 10 commandments in front of court houses, but they wouldnt want scripture from the Koran there. The have no problem with “under god”, but they wouldnt stand for “under allah” in the pledge. Christians have no problem with religion being worked into government, as long as its christianity thats being worked it, and thats not fair.

and I have no problem with that. If you can take something positive from religion, then the more power to you.

ok so by your thinking… if everything is created by something god. who or what the fuck created god?

Jesus is my savior I shall not be moved

this country was founded on christianity.

what country? this one? If I remember correctly the christians werent here first.

no it wasnt.

Thou shalt not kill… unless the indiginious people of a land you are trying to steal put up a fight. Manifest destiny.

the pilgrims left to get away from the church of england and settle in their own place so they could live their own beliefs. (vauge explanation but i haven’t brushed up on my american history since like soph year of HS 10 years ago)

and the indians did not find this country, the land is not the country, the country was founded by fore fathers and all them good people.

exactly and some natives went over to christianity whole heartedly

Darkstar needs to get it right. Catholics were the ones forcing conversion not protestants

i see no one really wants to respond to this. be rational for a minute and think about it.
