The story of Sunoco

Oh the great gas company that provides the best gas for our cars. At this point in time, I can certainly say that I will NEVER take any of my vehicles to Sunoco again. Here is my story:

On February 14th, I filled up a full tank of Sunoco Gas. Next morning my poor '03 Acura 3.2 CL-S no longer wanted to run well, I could not understand why. Under acceleration the car would shake, engine check light came on and after a few more days of driving the engine check light started to flash - which signifies misfire.

I knew that it was probably gas, but I decided to run that tank through and then fill up with another brand, I did so, and the car seemed to run better for the first hour or so, however returned back to its previous state.

Today I finally got a chance to take my car to the dealership, here is the end result. THANK GOD my compression is still good across all the cylinders, BUT 3 injectors are clogged severely, one out of them is completely blocked off. My 3rd cylinder coil has died and of course new spark plugs are required. The total repair is looking like it’s going to cost me around $1000, but I’m sure there are more hidden damages that were caused by this shitty gas. I told the dealership to change my fuel filter as well, but I’m hoping that my fuel pump is still okay since it would add up to several more hundred dollars.

So end result, here I am, the car is not covered under warranty because injectors is maintenence, I have no way of proving that Sunoco is at fault since I hadn’t documented the gas that I poured into my car, and my motor will probably never be the same because the dealership is not rebuilding it.

I discourage everyone from filling up at Sunoco. I filled up with 92 octane and it’s caused that much damage. Feel free to state your opinions or suggestions is any other legal actions that I can take. $1000 isn’t that much money and I’ll end up paying more to retain a lawyer to plea my case, therefore I’m tempted to just bite my tounge and simply forget about it.

Write them a letter. Even if you have no proof just send them letters until you get something. Be sure to tell them how many people you’re going to tell your story to.

That’s fuckn ridiculous. Bad gas causing damage is extremely tough to prove because, like you say, there are no records (unless you paid by debit or CC) but even then the company would simply blame it on user error or on something totally unrelated.

Which station did you fill up at?

I always pay by CC, but I only took my car to the dealership now, and there is no sample of the gas.

Sunoco new Richmond Heights - Elgin Mills and Yonge, but in my eyes, if one has bad gas, all have bad gas because they get it from the same source.

if other ppl cars start fucking up it is possible. i remember at my dealership it was proven over time that shell and petrocanada’s gas destroyed the fuel level sensors in gm vehicles, and if you could prove that you used their gas regularly, ie, have a speed pass etc then you were re-imbursed. sunoco however was one of the recomonded brands :? . i do know however that out of all canadian companys they have the most additives.

Yeesh, thats all we fill our cars with! Sunoco is right down the road from the dealership. As far as I know we’ve never had any problems either, but I’ll tell the bosses for sure.

if you filled up with bad gas, wouldn’t it be understood that other people that filled up with the same gas at the same location would have similar if not the same problems?

at least some of them are bound to realize that the gas was the issue, and they might also be taking action.

if enough people speak up to the gas company about the same location around a specific time period, then you should be entitled some sort of reimbursement.

just my 2 cents.

Yes, I was thinking about the same. I think I will write a letter to Sunoco headoffice once I finalize my bill, because I am SURE others have had the same problems as me.

i never go to that piec of shi* gas station only petro canada or shell

I think the fuel filter is inside the gas tank on CLs and is a mission to change, ask for the old one, to make sure they actually changed it.

hey pavel that sucks to hear man hopefully everything works out for you. we fill up all our cars from work at sunoco and have not once had a problem with their gas. It is possible that maybe just that station you filled up at had a problem with their gas or maybe had moisture in their tanks or something?

sunoco or no sunoco… all stations will have bad gas here and there…
its not acceptable, but theres not much you can do to prevent this.

hope you get some cash from them… good luck Pavel

that sucks, dude… maybe you should’ve pumped 94.

j/k Pavel… but seriously, i fail to see any proof whatsoever that the gas was in fact the cause of your problems. i hate to say it all sounds like a bad coincidence. i mean, one day your car is perfectly fine, and the next it’s completely fuct… all because of a supposedly bunk tank of gas??? sorry man, it just sounds a bit ridiculous to me.

FYI Shell and Esso are the worst places to get gas from.

This is mainly because of their HORRIBLE mistreatment of the environment, including their countless pipelines and refineries running through environmentally sensitive areas and their disregard for global warming, etc.

Do a quick search on “anti-shell” and “anti-esso” and you’ll see.

what about pioneer? the only reason why i gas up there is because they usually are a bit cheaper then the normal places and also you get the bonus dollars. it adds up.

I’ll give up a couple species and rainforests to have 5c off the price of my gas and collect air miles

kidding

Okay, well lets think for a minute about what can completely clog up the injectors… hrmm… fuel exits the tank through the fuel pump, goes through the fuel filter on OH WOW! there it is!!! it’s AT the fuel rail where the injectors are! I fail to see what else could cause my injectors to completely clog up.

pioneer and sunoco use the same gas i believe

So what are my options for running 94-oct this summer?

Cuz obviously Sunoco will fuck up my shit right?

i agree with big-byrd, post up a letter asking if anyone had the same thing happen to their cars around the same time it happened to you and whether they filled up at that station that day before that happened, than say you had your vehicle damaged and they might have as well, and see if they will call and leave their number and that you are fighting this, so thats my opinion in terms of legal action… not much else you can do

but i wouldnt fill up at that sunoco, looking at old gas station can have old tanks and leaks and all kinds of problems, i prefer to fill up at newer gas stations, dont fill up at no-name ones either, i filled up at beaver once i was in a rush, and they ripped me off, i think they only put in 15 when i asked 20, i couldnt see the screen, and than the gas ended up being diluted with something water or alcohol cause my car kept stuttering but my ka survived

thats my opinion
