Tire damage, need opinions

So my wife got snows today and was told one of her tires she wanted saved came off like this, yay or nay?? The shop is denying any responsibility, I just look at the way the sidewall is now deformed and say no way

That most definitely looks like they didn’t use enough lubricant on the tire/forced it on the rim as the duck head can rip into a tire like that if you let it. Although that goes for mounting. If the tire was dismounted and it looks like that then I’m not really sure how something like that would happen.

Me either but the sidewall had no deformation while it was on the rim, I can’t imagine it would hold air like this

That looks more like damage from installation not removal

i’ve had worse installed in the past and it was fine.

Yeah that could have happened when those were put on originally and you’d never see it with a wheel mounted on it. And it could definitely hold air like that. I’ve seen a lot worse

Its shot. Chuck it.
The $150 or less saved is not worth a blowout and a car in the ditch.
Also any reputable shop will refuse to mount that tire.

I’d run it, I wouldn’t put it on my wife’s car. I wouldn’t blame the shop.

I’ve seen worse work fine. But chances are it will rip worse when someone goes to re-install it, depends where they place the tear when they install it.

Could cause a bubble or a leak, I’ve seen both come from tears like that. With Renzo, I’d rock it but wouldn’t use it on the wife’s ride. That could have happened when it was installed. I’ve ripped brand new tires trying to install a fairly low sidewall on a post machine. Also, if they are getting old and the rubber is drying out it can happen taking them off with a post machine.

And who uses lube taking a tire off? You can’t lube a bead that is already mounted. Try to go somewhere that doesn’t still use a post machine cause they aren’t going to lube the side of the tool that takes the tire off when they have to hold that side of the tool when putting a new tire on.

its only a 225/60-16, I have ripped low profile sidewalls also but I wouldn’t consider this low profile, I have to check the date code but I believe it is fairly new, it has about 6/32 tread on it

I’ll offer more than opinion; I do not recommend using any tire with an anomaly such as the one pictured.

Apex separation. It won’t seal on the rim, if it does it won’t hold air well at all. I would guess from bad installation not removal

I definitely wouldn’t recommend using this. But I can tell you from plenty of experience that it would most likely be fine.

I have seen far worse work many times.

Why would you ever do that though?

Tires a fucking cheap and having a blow out on the highway or whatever can end not so great

I have a spare 225-60-16 laying around if you want it…

For burnouts?

Thanks honda4life but I have a few lying around, I just can’t believe it was mounted like this, tire did not leak and I did not see any sidewall deformation while it was on the car

Guys this tire if mounted without additional damage will probably not show any signs of damage (externally). Deathproof and I have installed much worse on our own rides with no issues. Now this doesn’t mean I’d put this on my wife’s car. Tabak and I would go through a set a week when were worked at a shop. You’ll know right away it’s going bad if the sideway starts to bubble bad. Why would we do it? Burn outs, shitty cars, cheap ass poor busted college kids, tires and labor were free, it’s fun, burn outs, drift, burn outs, ebrake, burn outs or did I mention burn outs?

This is incorrect.

lol what? You can clearly see that is where the splice is by the ply splice being the exact same place in the carcass.
