According to Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh, Subaru has confirmed it will build a turbocharged version of its Toyota-direct-injection FA20 engine (the one in the Subaru BRZ). That’s great news, right? Well, yes. Kind of.
Of course, Subaru has not yet confirmed it will build a corresponding turbocharged BRZ. But since the company has said the BRZ is the only car in its lineup slated to get the FA20 — for the time being — one can only assume that a turbocharged version will power that particular car, no? That’s just straight logic. At least, you know, for the time being.
Theres a big article about the car in the Feb DSPORT Mag. its actually quite good. They were hinting about the sti version coming out about a year after the scion version is out. i bet they want to wait and see how the sales goes.
And focusinprogress that is awesome looking!! Way better looking!!
The turbo drifting clip was Gushi driving again, I can only assume it’s a combination of promotional filming and testing for the new drift competition car.
That is supposed to be a larger platform, rumored to be the Lexus/Toyota Supra replacement.
And from today:

Earlier this morning, Scion sent out some very exciting news about Ken Gushi set to drift the FR-S during the 2012 season.
“The FR-S is an amazing display of Scion’s ability to produce an affordable performance vehicle. Until now, the Scion tC has been the main platform for motorsports and racing. We’re excited to announce that Scion Racing and GReddy Racing have teamed up to create the ultimate FR-S drift car for the 2012 Formula Drift season! Make sure to keep your eye on Ken Gushi and the Scion Racing team, who will be piloting the FR-S in the upcoming season.”
The Scion team is still giddy about the FR-S, and we can’t blame them. We were in the mood for 200 horsepower and 2,700 pounds, and the FR-S is ready and willing to tickle our fancy. So it was understandable that Scion didn’t have an all-new model to show us this week at the Detroit Auto Show, but Toyota’s car-loving brand did provide a taste of the FR-S “race” car.
The drift car isn’t just a fun project. Instead, it’s the result of a partnership between Scion Racing and GReddy, and will compete in the 2012 Formula DRIFT series with veteran driver Ken Gushi.
We’re guessing that the production FR-S won’t go anywhere near 600 horsepower without some serious aftermarket work, but we’ll at least have this drifter to drool over. Hit the jump to read over Scion’s press release, and be sure to click through the high resolution images of the FR-S race car in the gallery above.
Gotcha. I remember reading that Lexus would have a version based on a slightly stretched chassis and would be etched as a “baby lf-a”. Either way it’s a gorgeous car and I’m excited to see it in Detroit lol.
I like the Scion version better, surprisingly. I think Toyota would be wise to start stocking up on GT86 badges though, there will be a lot of “conversions.”
I’ll never buy one, but an RWD sport compact, cheap shitbox is going to get a big following in the dude-bro, boy racer, sticker loving, Initial D-curb jumping, douche bags out there.
Forgive me if there was already a thread, but I kinda see this car making a name for itself. How long has the 240 been out of production? What else is out there in the “4cyl” RWD market? Miata/MX-5? That’s all that comes to mind.
