Pickup conversions always been on my mind… now have a srd hatch i picked up for an incredible deal… good enough to chop it up without care… wondering if anyone knows if safety regulations would have an issue with it? will have atleast a 4 point cage
Roll cages are illegal.
100% illegal? i had thought you can get away with 3 point or something?
Nope. Saftey hazard.
shitty deal… ok aside from cage… any issues with the conversion? like not having rear seats and seat belts… i know safety regs are all about “vehicle must have all components it was produced with”
No where in the HTA does it say that a roll cage is illegal.
It’s that “grey area”.
Only thing we can do is pro’s and con’s about streeting any sort of cage (not roll bar):
Pro:
-structural integrity for that racecar driving
Cons:
-in the case of an accident, and no helmet; there’s a higher chance of breaking your skull and whatnot
-lol storage space?
-again in the case of an accident, do fire trucks, etc. have the equipment to get you out of the cage massacre? (I’m not sure if jaws of life will be able to do that)
…I dunno, I’m in class what other points are there?
But OP’s question was about pickup conversion…soooo

Jaws of life can cut through an a pillar like butter so I assume a roll cage is no struggle for it. Jeeps pretty much have roll cages from factory
This doesn’t look illegal, you don’t have to cut anything, and you’ll still feel like you’re driving a truck :O!
People either love or absolutely despise this.
Considering the highway traffic act explicitly states all original seat belts, seats, doors, mud guards etc etc etc must in be place, I don’t see a truck conversion being likely. Cages are not specifically stated as being illegal in either the Highway Traffic Act or the evaluation for a safe vehicle. However, if the cage interferes with the opening of the door/window, or obstructs view from either the side or front windshield, it’s illegal.
If you do make this, and it turns out legit, it’s basically going to be up to the officer if they hassle you or not. Worst case scenario is you get slammed with a unsafe vehicle charge.
I’ve made a Pontiac Sunbird into a truck, but it was a field car. It’s not something I’d want as my DD, just make it a track/drift slut and then you don’t have to worry about legality.
roll cages are not illegal, porsches have a stock option to get them. GT3 RS
I’m pretty sure this thing was driven on the street :s … Is it legal? All I know is it looks retarded.
Roll cages are legal according to the 3 officers who were performing a roadside safety inspection on my vehicle. As long as they do not inter fere with your seat belts. Only thing they said would be an issue are the 5 point harnesses. And where the shoulder straps are mounted. As to the “truck” conversion. Only issue I could seem them raising are the structual integrity of the vehicle post modification. And the new rear window not having a defroster because the factory window is equipped with one. But you would have to have one well educated cop to pull you over and cite these issues.
Solution:
:mpd:
Or one retarded cop who doesn’t care and will hassle you regardless lol
You can drive with a cage for ever, then have a cop that tows your car, because he doesn’t like your face.
truck conversions look funny!!! although that red 180sx looked good with that rear window replacement
This is very true. Only takes one.
to address the structural integrity issue, vert s13s do not have a roof obv… they braced moreso then a hatch or coupe because of this… im assuming i could plead that the car was originally a vert, so eliminating the c pillar would not be an issue…
Ive had mixed emotions about the conversion for a long time, i realized recently that theres alot of great ones, and alot of hillbilly ones… it can be pulled off proper. I have a hard on for it being multi purpose and functional as an everyday tasker, and tire hauler…
