TTZ Winter Resto/Repair/Build Thread: Updated 8/8/09 NEED A FAVOR!!

IB4MYLUCKHASN’TCHANGEDIBLEWMYTRANNY

I thought when it originally blew up that the hard oil line out of the block broke…

Who was the Red TT driver out today in Elma with black rear 18’s and stock fronts and no front bumper and exposed IC?

if it was the tranny or diff, he would be able to turn the engine over with the clutch pedal pushed in(unless he accidentally the whole clutch too).

If the engine is seized and the tranny/diff were still good, then the car would roll around in neutral just fine.

Not really rocket science, but then again, we did have to baby him through troubleshooting clutch master cylinder issues.

Not hard to figure out. Breaker bar on engine pully.

Guys. The engine is seized. Completely. Hard oil line broke. Can still go through all gears fine, clutch feels the same, i’m no mechanic but i’m also not an idiot.

Oreos

Chips ahoy!

Double stuffed nonetheless! ftw!

i liked the big wing =(

im glad u got rid of that god awful wing lol, i saw it at licatas and immediately said EW (plus i just saw josh’s Z over at jeffs when i pulled in which is str8 sex :mamoru: )

i really like that front bumper, it should look good

the j-spec bumper is tyte!

looks like everything is going good.

keep up the work

Here’s the story of the night…

You all may remember from my original blown Z thread the hard oil line i discovered that cracked straight in half. Behold, exhibit A:

It seemed almost IMPOSSIBLE that such a thick piece of metal tubing would just CRACK like that, untouched, for no reason while driving normally…

Well, while i was working under the car, i had a bit of an Isaac Newton like revelation, and while no apple fell on my head, something very interesting (and heavier and harder than an apple) did land on my forehead.

I present to you, members of the Jury, newly discovered exhibit B:

This fell on my head while i was removing the passenger side turbo’s downpipe, from right next to exhibit A. I got some better lighting under there, and made a STARTLING discovery!

Look closely…

Still can’t see it? Look closelier…

Yup, that’s the block…with a big 'ol chunk missing from it right were it meets up with the oil pan! WTF???

I believe that exhibit A was FRAMED for the catastrophic engine failure that took place last June, 2008. I’m under the impression now that when the engine blew, this chunk of whatever broke off with such violence that it hit and broke the metal oil line, and that’s when i got out of the car in a panic, looked under, and saw the oil pouring out everywhere.

It makes sense too, since there was a TON of oil pouring from the car, for an extended period of time before it finally dried out. Had the oil line broke first, and the car starved of oil and seized, i wouldn’t have observed so much pouring out when it did blow because most of the oil would have already been gone in a long, steady line behind the car.

Edit:

i hope this ends all discussion/doubt as to whether or not the motor actually blew, and not just tranny problems Onyx/ILC/MPD…

Wow…

Oh damn…

Oh, and i did get a lot of other work done tonight in the short couple of hours i had of free time to put into it:

  • Was able to remove down downpipes with testpipes still attached since the PB Blaster didn’t do shit and they’re still inseparable. was able to get the passenger turbo downpipe off by first getting at the two bottom bolts, then coming in from the top of the bay with a ratcheting wrench, squeezing an arm behind the engine against the firewall, from where the battery was. The driver side turbo downpipe was a bitch…the bottom 2 bolts were easy, and one of the top ones was easy…and for some reason the more accessible top bolt was a bitch…it was totally frozen in there. Weirdest part is that i have had this downpipe off in the recent past (within the past year or so), twice, while the other downpipe hasn’t come off since the swap years ago.

Well, i ended up SNAPPING that bolt off…leaving half of it in the turbo :picard:

It’s a damn good thing i won’t be using these turbos any more and they’re simply good for a core charge return to me now  :snky:

That exhaust bullshit took me over an hour…and in the rest of the time i managed to:

  • Pull the drive shaft.

  • Disconnect/pull the clutch slave cylinder.

  • Disconnect/pull the starter.

  • Disconnect the shifter and shifter bracket.

  • Remove rear transmission bracket…which is a funny story, because it involves me almost shitting my pants, literally…

There are 3 bolts on each side of said rear transmission bracket, 6 total. I removed 2 from each side…then upon removing the 3rd and final on the driver side, the whole bracket jolted down a bit…i wasn’t expecting the engine mounts to have enough play where the weight of the now free transmission would pull/tilt the engine a bit…and while it only moved an inch or so, it was enough to make me think for a second that this thing was coming down on my face…luckily nobody was there to hear me shriek.

Similar to the other day when i finally got the center H-Pipe of the exhaust off, and it kind landed on my chest…no big deal, other than the fact that for a split second i thought it was the car itself coming down on me before i realized the newly found weight on my chest was the exhaust…yeah, that was a scare and a half for a second too…

I bowl tomorrow night…and Wednesday i kinda wanna watch the Sabres game…so i’ll be back at it Thursday.

I have to buy a 3 foot ratchet extension to get to the top 2 bolts on the bellhousing, then the transmission should be off and the engine ready to be pulled out. Gotta find a way to brace the transmission up too since i don’t have a tranny jack, and i doubt the floor jack i’m using will fit under the car itself since i only have it about 16 inches off the ground on jackstands. Might just bring some wood to stack under the tranny or something…i’ll figure it out.

Also, my dad brought home the bolts he made for me today for the engine stand…Tits McGee…

i bet somebody over tightened or had the wrong thread bolt in the oil pan … which created a stress crack and took a chunk of the block out …

I’ve seen that before

Good luck with that…with all the issues you are having taking it apart…I can’t even imagine how much fun putting it back together properly will be…
