Turboseals shitting the bed?

hrm. dont want to post this. but still need to.

my car smokes(whitish-gray oil saturated smoke) upon idling after a cold start(this is after warm up once car has gotten to operating temp. and is idling) and makes me believe the bearing in my turbo is shot. also after a recent oil change i am now a little low on oil(being burned off in the exhaust due to bearing letting oil past seal?)

please tell me im crazy. :smash2:

oh and mods can move to tech. talk sorry i forgot this was a kind of “technical” question

usually burning oil is blue in color.White smoke is coolant. Its hard to say without seeing it.You could try to pull off the intake pipe/up pipe and see if there is any oil in it.

I would take off the charge pipe right off the compressor side and check to make sure its not spraying oil right into the engine which can happen too. How many miles does the engine and turbo have? Somtimes they can coke up a little but enough to prevent the oil from draining efficiently and the oil pools in the turbo itself and gets burned off but that usually results in ALOT of smoke

How many miles are on your car???

well, after sitting about 5 hours, i started it up, let it get to operating temp. drove it about 3/10 of a mile and parked went into a building and came out and it was smoking pretty good. but when i reversed and drove away it was A LOT of smoke(and i was parked on a slight grade where the oil would have sat in the turbine and not gone back into the engine like you said)

a “few” people have been complaining of similar situations

idk lxiflyby kinda sounds like he hit the nail on the head.

but people i have been talking to(including the only company to have successful engine management for the car) are saying the bearing on the exhaust side likes to not seal and let some oil past it. this oil is then burned off in whitish-gray exhaust smoke

So check your oil often and have a smoke machine for a car too

So let the dealership handle the hog. Not your problem.

wont hurt anything, cept any o2 sensors you have in the exhaust. Most turbos have only a single piston ring-like seal on the turbine side to keep oil out of the housing, actually its more to keep exhaust gas from entering the oil drain and pressurizing the crankcase.

Seals are going. Seems to be a common problem on MS3 and MS6. Most people notice that problem after they install a downpipe because it takes some backpressure of the turbo allowing it to spin faster. Apparently that will cause the seals to go.

:word:
I’m not sure of his username on here but I think his name is cory, I met him at mighty once, hes got a MS6 with a full exhaust and it was burning oil bad, he said it was the turbo seals and I was kinda shocked, seems like a common problom with these cars then.

coryishurr is having the same problem

I wish I would have had a video of when my relay failed on my oil pump that puls oil away from the turbo on my SHO. it filled the entire 5 lane street with smoke. it was bad.

Yeah its pretty common with the speed 6 and speed 3.

I’ve gotten smoking twice with my ms6, hasn’t happened in months though. To reproduce it I’ll jave to drive the car normally, turn it off, then about 5 minutes later turn the engine back on, and let it idle for about 5 minutes.

I’ve been trying to get it to happen more frequently so the dealership can reproduce it, and replace the turBLO.

reminds me of the time my turbo got coked up and was spewing oil into the turbine, clouds of oil like a mofo, it was open downpipe too so people were honking thier horns shouting “HEY YOUR CARS ON FIRE” lol

A little something that was used to solve a big problem in FSAE engines due to the turbo setups required by rules. Might be or some use to look at problems and solutions that may apply to normal cars.

yea im having the exact same problem…apparently from reading some of the mazda forums its not going to kill the turbo or the engine right away its just annoying/embarrassing when you pull up to a light and BOOM! straight up rave style smoke…i think i remember you saying you had the mazdaspeed exhaust on there so it wont void your warranty so if you can get them to reproduce it and show them how many people are having this problem they should fix it for you and not give you a hard time…i thought about going back to stock but apparently the cat’s do a pretty good job of hiding the smoke and when they finally go to shit and let the smoke out our warranty is usually up:banghead: so it kinda sucks…im goin with a GT35R and a bunch of other shit so we shall see what happens…good luck with the warranty work! just keep on them…those mazda bastards are pretty stubborn with this kinda shit…
