TWC and Comcast merging

it will be interesting to see if this gets blocked, but I expect it to happen. I don’t really think it can make things much worse and even if it does that will just speed up innovation/competition.

There is no legal monopoly, ever since 1992, anyway. Today cable companies are considered natural monopolies since it is too expensive for a new cable company to come in and wire up the city and throw in headends.

TWC dropped a lot of coin into WNY, we have some pretty good equipment. It is not so much a company name that may suck. It is usually your neighborhood that may cause issues. Heavy college areas typically have speed issues at certain times. Lots of squirrels? Good luck… I have nothing special going on and I can hit my 30x5 24/7 365… No company designs a system to have every user’s cap available 24/7.

It will be interesting to see what the govt does about this buy…

People complain about speed issues specially around sites like youtube however its very little to do with TWC.

Its traffic engineering, peering, and other issues on a much higher level

Any time Buffalos peering points up the larger TWC network ever got near a congestion point additional bandwidth was added same thing goes with links to CMTS’s and other equipment.

The next move is for Google to buy Comcast.

For those of you thinking the government might not allow this…

Analysts also point out that Comcast is remarkably well connected in Washington. In fact, its chief lobbyist, David Cohen, was a guest at the White House state dinner for the French president on Tuesday night.

So don’t expect this administration to block it any time soon. If they’re willing to sell ambassadorships I’m sure cable isn’t a big deal.

Welcome to capped bandwidth and throttled netflix subscriptions.

This is exactly why I hung onto my 56k V.92 modem.

Slapping people upside the head with the OSI model

LOL…There might be 6 or 7 of us who truly know it

I like how they make it seem as though each layer has its own pinout on the patch cable.

If they really wanted to be creative, they would of used the proper color order for a straight-through cable.

wouldn’t that be the opposite of creative

Just get Fios.

If you live somewhere that Fios is unavailable…move.

Last I heard, they have soft caps 250-300GB, but do not enforce them.

bummer for you guys.

i havent had cable in 5 years though…

TWC sucks. I’ve had it for a year and the internet has been fine, (I’m not a huge downloader and my last house had Hughesnet!) but the cable…“oh, you’re watching that channel? It’s not going to work for an hour.” I signed up for FIOS at my new house and made sure to ask every single possible cost upfront. They came to install and wanted around $120 X4 to run the cable in my little ranch house. The installer said “Oh yeah, they never tell you that when they sign up.” So either I, or the electrician working on my house runs the cable, or I call the guy’s personal cell number who signed me up for this mess. Guess what I’m doing this week.

Living here in the suburbs of Austin, the choice was either time warner, or ATT Uverse.

We chose Uverse.

Bought a new house in a different suburb, the only choice is time warner.

In Austin Proper, google fiber is coming, and ATT GIGAPOWER is already here. It will be only a matter of time until the nice suburbs demand it.

Honestly, almost nobody needs that much bandwidth right now.

My 15mbps UVERSE connection is just fine.

Surprisingly I have been relatively happy with my time warner, but I only get internet. The speeds have been a bit slower than advertised but I don’t pay for anything but the lowest tier (streaming REAL hd video isnt possible). Ive had a few billing issues but those were resolved for the most part with little hassle.

My biggest fear about comcast is the throttling. I’m using well over 500gb a month and based on what I have read, I would definitely be throttled.

I left FIOS behind when we moved. Stuck with TWC. TV costs more for fewer channels, channel guide sucks, internet seems OK. Got fucked out of our VISA gift card when we signed up as new customers. Gave my wife the run around for months and each rep had a completely different story for the gift card. All bullshit. Would go back to FIOS if I could.
