this is a solid way of communicating with ANY company. kudos.
what you probably read about was LTE.
Yea it was quite a shock since I push a hell of a lot of data through my phone. Nice getting hit with a $26 in data charges.
Yea I had to change my plan when someone on the plan wanted to update their phone which is bullshit in itself. You should be able to keep the current plan you are on if you are staying a customer IMO. Not be like, “Oh hai verizon, i want to pay you for an already overpriced phone but seriously, change my plan because this saving money and being happy with mine is over rated”. Also, $30/month on top of a calling plan is a rip off when providers out there provide it for free on their $30/month voice plans.
Since my company is going to AT&T, I am leaning towards carrying one phone with my personal number and using it for work so swapping SIM cards wouldn’t be an issue. With either provider, I need to see calls coming on on both numbers so simply swapping SIM or NAM modes would not be acceptable since I would not get calls on the second number while I am on the first one.
I agree with the features. I hate having to check my plan over and over again when I change something. So many times the incompetent assholes have taken the feature off the wrong number or added it to another line. I finally started recording the calls after I received a $224 texting bill when they told me it was on but wasn’t. Seriously, someone can run up data until the threshold and then get letters telling you to stop but when someone is constantly texting and racing up hundreds of dollars on a $30/month calling plan, they wouldn’t think to ask?
good points. And we obviously don’t know eachother personally, but I’m always incredibly polite with whoever I’m dealing with. I used to work at McDonalds for my first job. haha so I’ve had some great customer experiences. I find it easy to change someone elses attitude by just continuing to be nice to them. They can’t stay mad or argue if you are treating them as kindly as possible.
I certainly don’t think unlocked phones are cheap… BUT can you really argue about the convenience of a SIM card? Its just nice to “upgrade” whenever you want.
We can all talk about this for days, but when it comes down to it, it’s based on personal experiences. Which is why some people hate a certain company, and other people will swear by that same company.
I’m not too sure about the CDMA thing either, could have been a bullshit article anyhow.
But i’m still going with AT&T since I just bought an unlocked Iphone lol.
i’m curious, what are you doing that would use that much data?

if you purchased a voyager or venus, then yes, you are required to. the way those phones use data, vzw requires them to be on a nationwide plan.
how is $30 on top of a voice plan a ripoff? do you think wireless networks handle data as easily as voice? is there a personal value to your data usage? who should pay for the upkeep of the network, R&D, or expanding the network?
the only company that i can think of that might give a pda plan away for free with voice is sprint on the sero plan. that seems to be working out well for them, you might want to check out the links I posted yesterday.

thats cool, however the way it was phrased earlier is that work will be issuing you a phone/number.

WAT? are you talking about using more than 5gb on a air card / smartphone?
they put limits on that for QoS issues. someone using an aircard to constantly download/upload can downgrade the quality of service/speeds of the next user. think cable internet, your speeds suffer during high traffic times. if you need to use more than 5gb/month, you are using the wrong solutution.
how hard is it to be responsible for your account and check online for the features? or maybe, if you really feel your issue wasnt handled or isnt being handled correctly, hang up and call back? I mean, getting stupid people on the phone happens at every company.
you can do the same thing with VZW, and soon, you will be able to use any certified CDMA device. I deal with lots of these right now, and its not tought for a device to be certified.
We can all talk about this for days, but when it comes down to it, it’s based on personal experiences. Which is why some people hate a certain company, and other people will swear by that same company.
im all for competition, it helps keep the consumer in mind. if VZW was the only carrier around, i cant imagine the horrors…
haha true true.
So while were on this… What are the actual advantages for GSM over CDMA. As a network that is, disregarding service providers. Simply faster for data transfer? stronger signal?
I recently did some research for a customer of mine, CDMA seems to be more “private”. anyone with the know how, time, and resources can hack into a call, voice or data, GSM or CDMA. However, it seems to be harder with CDMA.
I personally prefer the voice quality of CDMA.
the fact that I wont be able to use my personal cell phone on my imaginary trips to europe and around the world doesnt bother me. international roaming rates are rediculous no matter what company you are on, and its easy to pick up a throw away prepaid phone if i need to. besides, if im traveling for pleasure, i dont want to be bothered by the phone. if its for work, well, let work pay for it.
if all else fails, there are a few world phones VZW will rent to me, or if i want to, i can buy and swap onto my account.
data speeds, meh. i doubt the average user could tell the difference between 3g GSM and EVDO. I dont feel knowledgable enough to chime in about GSM speeds, but here is a copy/paste from an EVDO REV-A Aircard:
EV-DO Rev. A capable device with typical speeds of
600 Kbps – 1.4 Mbps (download) and 500 Kbps – 800 Kbps (upload)
If you really want to get into the nerd of if, this site is pretty good.
EDIT: i need to get some work done now…
sweet!
Going to try this. My biggest gripes with VZ are shitty phone offerings, crippling the phone’s capabilities and there data plans and setups for PDA’s is just sad!
Looking at either sprint or ATT
enter typical wireless sheep, stage right.
I am gonna move off of VZW (if work pays for my phone) over to ATT strictly for the handset variety. The rates and the service are a wash IMO. VZW offers no PDA with a larger than QVGA screen. Besides, HSDPA will allow you to be connected to the data network while being on a call. EVDO Rev0 does not and there are only 1 or 2 RevA handsets on VZW.
Sony/Ericsson’s Xperia X1 or the HTC Diamond or the iPhone 2 all are in consideration for handsets.
Shit load of emails, web portals, and other info.
in theory, digital voice is data so technically i am paying for data twice
i do agree they should maintain and upkeep their network but explain to me where my $89 per month goes? also now that i pay $1.99 a megabyte for Web 2.0 access, how the hell is that not paying for upkeep?
Yea they have sweet plans and rates. People seem to be happy too with it from the people I know that switched.
I know when I had my Treo 650 on Verizon and had the data plan, people were getting letters about their data usage if you went over i think 5gb a month.
So you are saying that when I call Verizon and say, “Hello. I would like to add text messaging to number A and remove web from number B.” and they say “Arlight, I have added texting to number A and remove web from number B”, I am supposed to continually check the status of my account and plan?
Thats not my job. These people are PAID to manage accounts. How fucking hard is it to listen to a customer, make a change, verify the change, and hang up? Its not like I am asking them to explain how CDMA works. I simply am asking them to do their job. That is poor customer service.
what kind of phone?

what are you paying $89 for? i have no idea what plan you are on. And I agree, if you are paying $1.99/mb you are paying for upkeep. it seemed you though VZW should just give it to you for free.

you totally missed the sarcasm.

5 gb of use, no tethering, is a lot to push through on a phone.
you have to keep in mind that this is NOT a solution for a primary internet connection, its a mobile internet solution. if you are using 5b or more, or even anywhere close to 5gb in my mind, you are not using the product/service how it is intended. again, QoS is one of the main reasons behind this.

im not saying that is hard at all. in my time at retail i never thought it was an issue. however, they are not paid to MANAGE accounts. that term has a whole differnt meaning. it IS your job to manage your own account, you are responsible for it.
again, human element. there could have been a miscommunication on their part. i’m assuming they fixed the billing issue?
Explain to me how I am a sheep… there phones tend to lag behind the new gadgets and for crippling… see bluetooth.
You cannot try to tell me there data plans are good.
I have absolutely no gripes with there CS or voice quality in the almost 7 years that i have had them now they have been simply amazing. But being a bit of gadget guy and me and the wifey wanting PDA phones VZ just doesn’t see to make much sense.
The smartphones they haven’t crippled. I haven’t used a regular phone in a long time so I can’t comment on those but the other stuff has been great, just a lack of handset variety.
Samsung SCH-U740

I am not sure as the price. I think its 99 + 2 more lines or something like that. I dont handle my bills. I just know I now am on the nationwide plan and getting raped for data for MOBILE WEB. Not true data. I was fine with minutes but wtf.
you totally missed the sarcasm.
Maybe you were being sarcastic but I know quite a few people who ditched verizon for these plans and love them.
[QUOTE5 gb of use, no tethering, is a lot to push through on a phone.[/QUOTE]
Not really. On a 1x Treo 650 Palm Based I pushed 2-4 gb a month through it. Flashed the ROM support a 4gb SD Card and pushed email and documents through it.

Again, it was only a phone that I pushed the data. Never used my laptop with it. Never did P2P. Just simply did emails, file attachments such as PPT slides and audio clips for voicemails that come into my email box, and web browsing.
I have my home internet connection I use for all my serious transfers which are way above 100gb a month.

Do you work for Verizon by any chance? I dont know you personally and dont want to offend you because you havent handled my account or dealt with you. I agree they are not paid to MANAGE my account like a stock broker manages my stocks and continually makes changes. I do expect some type of consistency when I request a change to be made. They are being paid to service my account and when I ask for a simple feature to be added or removed on a specific line, I expect it done. If the incompetent people in Customer Service cant do this, either A) fire them, save me the fucking money on my plan, and make everyone use the web portal (which always tells me to call customer service anytime i make a change anyways) or B) stop saving money by hiring incompetent assholes and hire people that understand simple tasks. When I call DirectTV and change my programming from the HD package to Basic, I dont get a bill the next month for HD package, HBO, Showtime, and 10 movies on demand.
The resolution from Verizon after the $200+ text bill when I was assured “Texting has been added to the number”? Verizon denied everything. I had the date and time of the call but no recording. All the did was offer to give me free texting the next month and cut the bill in half. Sound fair? You tell me. Basically I was lied to and the resolution was paying $120 and getting a free $20 feature for a month for something that was told was on my phone.
Now all my calls with Verizon are voice recorded with the time and date and also the reps name. Sad that this is the only company I deal with that I have to do so.
I just called and used the administrative fee to opt out. And bam! No problem. total call time 8:20. If they were as helpful in the past as this guy was today, I probably would have stayed with them haha.
Hello Iphone lol.
:thankyou:
$30 for data isnt good?
get vcast for $15/month. unlimited data on those phones, never heard of a cap either.
Maybe you were being sarcastic but I know quite a few people who ditched verizon for these plans and love them.
i know some people happy with them as well, i was coming at it from a business standpoint. that company is in some serious trouble.
Not really. On a 1x Treo 650 Palm Based I pushed 2-4 gb a month through it. Flashed the ROM support a 4gb SD Card and pushed email and documents through it.
where you might see it as normal use, that amount of data is above average.

I dont work for verizon anymore, however i do still work with them, but from more of a b2b standpoint.
i am with you on the incompetent people point though, i have resorted to just hanging up on people once i figure out they are a rookie.
its can be easy to get what you want from them, but it may take hanging up and calling back a few times. i’ve gotten thousands of dollars of charges reversed, the largest being $600+ of legitimate voice overages. generally speaking, they are more than happy to re-rate the last month on a higher plan as long as you go up to that higher plan.
my point was that that could have happened at any company, not to try and brush off the fact that it happened. ive been there, it sucks. one of my ex’s had a razr when they first came out on vzw and it had this issue where it didnt like to disconnect from get it now after the session had ended. 3000+ minutes later, the bill came. it took a few reps before I got someone to look at the bill/issue enough before they figured it out.
i will be doing the same as soon as the 3G iphone is available in july. i am tempted to opt-out on the last possible day and wait for the iphone.
