weird squeaking sound from rear!!!

hey,

i used the search function, but couldn’t come up with anything, basically, when i turn my steering wheel all the way to the left or the right (for example, doing a full u-turn), the rear wheels make a squeaking noise right when i have the maximum turn, like it doesn’t continuously squeak while i’m turning, just right before my steering wheels turn all the way to the left or right…i was thinking maybe somethign with the HICAS system, but the light doesn’t come on, and in all the searches, they all said it was a leaking problem. Any ideas?? thanks.

When you turn all the way to the right or the left, you should always back off a little bit once you have reached the end. If you hold it all the way to one side, the p/s pump is working harder than it is supposed to. If you back the wheel off a bit once you have reached the full lock position, does the noise persist? If is does then you might have a pump problem, if the noise goes away, you might be ok.

Also, check your p/s pump reservoir, you might be low on fluids and the pump is cavitating, this would cause a sort of whinning noise.

Hope this helps, if not, maybe more info is needed.

If it is from the rear, this is what happens when you have an LSD.
Although you probally have a VLSD since you have HICAS and it most
likely wouldn’t lock doing a low speed U-Turn so that wouldn’t make
sense.

Is this while the car is moving or stationary? That would be helpful to know.

And are you SURE the noise is comming from the back? If it is comming
from the front it is most likely just overstressing the pump from applying
force once you have reached lock.

hey, yea it’s definately from the rear, i drove down my street steering left and right while the car was rolling just to listen, and no it doesn’t persist when i turn it back, it just makes the noise initially when i turn it left or right fully. Hmm, i dont know where all the fluid tanks are located yet, i dont have the owner’s manual, if i go get like a Helm’s style book for the 240sx, would it have all the info that is in the owner’s manual? cuz then i’ll juss go to canadian tire 'n buy it and check out everything u guys have said. thx.

To add to what’s already been said… your PS pump will howl more loudly if you are low on PS fluid.

alrite thanks i’ll check that…as soon as i find out how, do you guys know of any repair manual for the 240sx that i can buy from a store that also contains all the basic info that is in the owner’s manual? thx.

You can download the FSM for your car, I’m sure someone will have the link and hopefully they will be nice enough to post it.

I don’t think you are low on PS Fluid. It might have something to do with the LSD like Andy said. Don’t know if the same sound would come from a VLSD though.

how fast are you going when you do this? There might be a problem with your hicas

well i wasn’t going fast, it was on my street, so i made a full left turn, well actually, i noticed today and yesterday, it doesn’t do it on the left turn, it’s more the right turn only now, i do a full right turn, right hwen i let go, it squeaks, but it doesn’t keep going, just makes like a one time noise, then stops, and i was probably going like 10km/h? like i was giong real slow, but i’ve done it at around 40 today, same noise. well it doesn’t seem to cause any problems but i’ mgonna have to check the PS just incase, cuz ihave no idea how to tel lif it’s the VLSD or not :frowning:

then it might be the suspention. I have that with my beater, when I make a turn, I hear the springs tensing. I’m not sure if you have the same problem, but It’s because they have some surface rust, you hear them squeek, and that is why the sound is only for a short period of time.

In this case, you rear drivers side spring…maybe?

hmm…is that a severe problem? i’ll have it checked out this weekend by a friend of mine. thx for responses.

most likely not severe, only annoying. I bet if you lube up whatever is squeeking, It will go away. I doubt it’s anything performance related though.

yea that was what i was thinkin as well. thanks i’ll find out.

Fix the squeek yet?
I’ve had this problem and it turned out to be the brakes…when turning a tight radius the low pad sensor tab touched the rotor because the calipers have movement (normal) thus making a costly sounding noise…I also had it in the front…turned out to be rust on the back of the rotor rubbing on the backing plate.

Mark

hmm, yea i was gonna check out the brake pads, i haven’t had a chance to bring it in to my friend’s shop because of exams though :? but after next week i’ll be free
