1990 240… body, frame, suspension, brakes, electrical, everything except the motor is perfect. and by perfect its becasue ive fixed most of it already. Motor leaks coolant somewhere, injector is slightly leaking, IACV is screwed up making me have to hold the throttle at stand still to prevent stalling
My Question:
Should I?
Fix problems
Get another KA24(D)E
Get a SR/CA
the idea of a v8
My Debate:
I dont want this to cost more than $3500-$4000, I want to car to run well and not have many problems because up untill now, the car has been solid and have not had any major problems. This is my daily driver, so again I need it to be reliable. On the other hand I would like a bit more go than the KA offers.
So there is my problem, just wnat to know what you guys think.
I’d go with get another KAE (assuming that’s what you already have in there)
Then turbo the sucker, while tearing apart your current one, rebuilding it with all new internals. Then when you’re done, swap in the built motor and you have power and reliability. This will run you more than you said, but it’ll be spanned over a reasonably long time so you won’t end up plopping down a lot of cash right away.
jdmengineland has a sr20 red for $2200, im sure i could get that in and running for under $4000… but then again i dont know how much an sr swap would cost or the reliability of the motor would be
get a KA24E with 150000 no more than that, make sure you replace timing chain on it, injerctor rings, and a minter flywheel clutch, if youre getting a shop to do it, it should be cheaper at the same time as the swap since they have to pull it out anyway, you should be set for another two years or mroe if you drive safe with that and shouldnt cost you over 1000 without you touching it, ka24e - a decent one 150 - 250 bucks, installation should be around 750, unless you do it yourself than shouldnt cost over 200 haha, good luck
mikeness has it, you think you’ll leave it bone stock but you always get way into it, someone will suggest one thing and you’ll figure, hey why not, thats when it begins.
Forget fixing the problems, find a mechanic you trust to fully diagnose everything that is actually problematic on the engine first. Get a quote/estimate on the repairs. This gives you the facts, and options. THEN if at all reasonable, get everything fixed.
If you’re finding head gasket issues and other bigger fixes are going to be needed, THEN think about your other options.
Be very careful with what you decide if it’s your daily driver.
either do the swap with varun or get a kade rebuild it with a stroker kit and prepare it for a turbo and then turbo it or get as much power as u can n/a and turbo when u have more money
wow guys thanks for the input, i really appreciate it…
bing or slipperysilvia, if i do go with a the sr i would love for someone whos done it before to do it… and i would love to help out too as well i would like to know where you guys are located, hopefully its not too far from richmond hill
im going to see how much cash i can scrape up and ill go from there, i think the sr will be my first choice, but maybe the ka24(d)e swap and then a rebuilding of my e would be a good choice too.
but like anything it all comes down to the money
thank you all for your replies, i need to get somthing done sooner rather than later.
edit: i just found this on ka-t.org… i just want to know how reliable, and anything else i would need to do to my current motor for this set up as well as an approx pricing and availiblity for these parts
Very Mild Build: around 180 rwhp
Turbo Manifold
Blow Off Valve
Turbo (T25)
Downpipe 2.5" is perfectly fine
Pipe to connect turbo to throttle body
Fuel Control:
FMU (not recommended, but doable) Raises fuel pressure per boost to make injectors flow more than normal.
SR 370cc Injectors. These can be found at places found at the bottom)
Apexi SAFC2
Greddy Emanage
Mild build sounds fine to me, should make the car a lot more fun without sacrificing reliability too much. I’d reccomend you stay away from the stroker kit though, personally. One, it’s expensive, two… well, most people wanting to make N/A power from a KA are looking for a way to de-stroke the engine
im pretty sure i need to change the timing chain on this motor, i get that horrible rattle on startup, its probably the tensioner or the guides, but might as well change everything while its off, as well i need to change the valve cover gasket, which shouldnt be too hard. ill need new injectors, which need to be changed anyway, and to fix a coolant leak which shouldnt be too bad and finally a new IACV, which is causing me some problems atm.
