alright just had a question about tires and the way they perform.
what would be better for the front:
a) 60% tread tires that are 195 width (dunloop sp sport 5000)
OR
b) 40% tread tires that are 225 width (michilan hydroedge)
with physics in mind, it would seem to me that the 225 width tires would stick better than the 195 in a drift application because it would cover more surface area than the 195 and this would exceed the benefit of a bit more tread. imo, 195 would seem to understeer under brake drifting than the 225 since less surface area is covered.
so basically im asking what is more impt, larger surface area and less tread, or less surface area and more tread.
i do realize that the dunloop are better tires overall then the hydroedge, but what if they were the same brand tires but different dimensions?
I would go with the better tires on the front, they will last longer up there and are more expensive to replace. Burn up the Hydro’s and replace them with wide good quality tires, then use them up front and burn off the skinny Dunlops.
Contact patch gets larger as the tire wears, and rain tires generally have less of a footprint than summer tires.
The only downfall to putting the worn tires up front is when it rains you will have shitty traction.
*Edited after re-reading the question
Also, the Dunlops are made to get hot, they perform better then. The Hydro’s aren’t meant to get as hot, I think they will melt faster due to the rubber compound.
