Who actually enjoys working on their cars?

I honestly don’t like working on my car.
Its not that its confusing to me or anything I have never run into something that was beyond me when working a car.
I only really work on my car for the end result of driving it and it being better.

like right now winter beater getting an sr because the ca was dead in it. I could care less about the work part. I just want the end result.

I am just venting from a fuel pump fuse blowing when i try to start the car.
Ticking me off.

it’s cool when you are learning stuff or doing new things, but when you move on with life and finally have a real job / business / family is just totally does not make sense to be under the car resting a catback on your chest, bolting up your cat-forward exhaust after re&re’ing your turbo at 10pm at night on a tuesday when you have to be in the office at 8am the next day with a 45 minute commute.

on a nice day if it’s something easy like a starter, coilover work or an oil change or whatever it’s still nice to wrench a little bit… but fukk… i have zero interest dropping the diff out even though it’s not difficult… i just dont wanna fuck with that anymore.

^I am totally there…
The car I have is a mint american car. I just need something to drive the winter and daily all year around for now.
So this made sense I had it sitting at my house anyway.
So it being american it has no vlsd. So I have to put one in now.

Why can’t I just buy a new 180sx damn it lol

i got into cars a little late, but i caan honestly say i enjoy it cause i like the feeling accomplishment. i haven’t gotten into the big stuff yet, like engine swaps and all that but i still enjoy the little stuff that i do and i just want know how to fix my car if anything goes wrong. And also as a cullinary student and working in a restaurant, i like the change of pace.

yea…id ont mind workin on cars i guess…but it’s always something i’ve never done(as simple as the process may be) and i get really annoyed when something doesnt work haha…but at the end of it all it’s the end result that makes me smile…if i could afford to, 'id always bring it to my mechanic to do everything lol

I guess for me having been working on a project s13 for like 4 years while I have been in school there isn’t a single bolt on an s13 that I haven’t turned.

It is wearing thin on me. I think even if I were to move to something like an fd rx7 it would be the same only more annoying because I would have to figure out where everything is again and how it comes out in a different way.

I don’t know how people can do this for a living.

I don’t mind working on my car because I want to, or adding performance goodies or whatever, I don’t like working on my car because I have to, kinda like Bing said, the last thing I wanna do after an 11hr shift in a retread plant is to come home and be stuck under my car until 9 at night… That’s why I’m getting a newer, clean, stock car, and building from there.

^hehe you think that will solve your issue. mine are as clean as they can be. no rust.
I get what your saying tho.

as a side note this is the first real discussion I have seen on son in a while.

I absolutely hate it. But beating the shit out of it on the track is worth all the effort. But this is because I can’t afford to pay someone to build them for me.

Andrew.

Love working on my car when its my choice, hate it when its 1am and I have to get to work in the morning lol. btw check your sending unit ground that’ll make your fuel pump fuse pop.

I have sorta been feeling the same way. Maybe it’s just because I’m in school now and don’t have time for it and even less money. I just can’t see my self going out to work on my car anymore.

I think back to times ive changed an alternator on a street in the snow. Or spending all nighters fixing or changing something only to get an hour of sleep before a track day. And other stuff like that.

Sure when it works its great. And maybe its just the schedual im on now. But it just seems crazy. And then you look at my car and you can’t even tell anything good has been done and I wonder if it was worth it.

i hate it too

but!

i feel good when im drifitng at 120km/h and i know that i torqued every bolt to spec on the car and im running jdm rust free suspension and aftermarket shit and my car handles amazing

otherwise i just don’t trust anyone else but me working on my car.

I hated working on my past S13s because the bolts were always rusted. I sometimes actually enjoy working on my vert though because its so clean.

I like it. Although I usually have help with the more complicated stuff. I get a sort of satisfaction that I’m sure everyone else feels. I’m still very new to mechanics and the such, so it’s all still fun for me. But sometimes even at this stage, I find some things trivial and annoying. Especially when people don’t notice it. I’m no attention whore, but my hard work goes unnoticed to many and it angers me sometimes =P.

all i can say… i didnt enjoy working on my car but I saved myself thousands of dollars. Thats what counts and feeling the pride in doing it yourself

Ok, I used to like it. Than now when I think how much time I’ve dumped into it, it makes it kind of annoying. Unless you are bolting on a gangster new seat or installing new blow off valve, its just not the same as when you first start out. And yeah exactly at what Bing said, when you have to go out at 10pm at night and its 4 o clock your fucking tired just got off work and you have to drop your tranny or change your turbo outlet gasket you ujst want to burn it down to hell. And then when your full of it theres SG-motorsport…

i hate working on my car but i love that feeling in the end where you know that you built it and you know it means somthing to you deep down inside cause you put so much time and effort into it… it makes me angry when shit dosent work how i want but i always get past it and i love knowing that i built my car not some guy i just trew money at to do it for me.

Unless you are a filthy rich, a family man, strapped for time, or just plain burned out, we might as well learn to turn a wrench since we call ourselves car enthusiasts.

P.S. A day’s labour in a shop is probably more than what some people make in a week.

When nothing retarded goes wrong (such as breaking rusted bolts), I usually enjoy it a fair bit. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m kind of a perfectionist so I find myself always tweaking things to be a little better.

Diagnosing tiny little intermittent impossible-to-track-down issues on Nissan’s drive me NUTS though!

i hate working on my car when its transmission/differential related. anything else im downfor.
but on another note. working on your car means you dun fucked something up previously. take care and pride in what you do so that the first time is the last time you look over it.
my car has been no. NO hastle to me other then the regular jazz…as in spark plugs, oil and a nice new whole coolant flush.
you keep up to date, and your fine.
you can argue the point about people beating on their cars. i beat my car daily over and over again and the bitch just wants more.
