Good. I really hope the SCCA eventually adds on Road Tire for national events.
They already have one - it’s called ST
wait so there is no more ST* classes?
Yes, but not for stock classes. My point is that there should be something for people who don’t want to modify their cars, but who also don’t want to truck and change wheels to every event. Some people don’t want that hassle, others don’t want the expense, others prefer driving on street tires, but it wouldn’t be hard to add a RHS->RSS class structure.
I know I COULD run in STX, but I’d be as poorly off as running in a GS against people with street tires, given some of the mods allowable in STX.
ST is still there, don’t worry. Road Tire is for anyone in any other class that doesn’t want to compete with the others on slicks. It’s an indexed class - like Novice. No ST classes are allowed in Road Tire though.
There won’t be a National road tire class because people at the national level don’t mind buying the fastest tires, and lugging them around, and doing the work in order to be a National Champion.
oh ok - if i knew we were going to have road tire classes i might have not bought suspension mods for this year… oh well, im glad i did anyways it feels soooooo good.
Sorry - I’m still a little bitter about this decision.
ginger is always bitter :gotme:
Its not so much that they don’t mind doing that as much as they will do whatever it takes to win. So if you introduce real street tires into stock class you open a hell of a pandoras box. It’s already affecting the ST classes. There are so many different brands, you don’t think that the people out there aren’t going to test a lot of those tires? You don’t think they’re going to shave them? You don’t think there will still be trailer queens in stock?
All of a sudden your cheap classes get expensive fast. Not to mention that a lot of cars would have to be reclassed. A C5Z06 vs an Elise on R Comps is a hell of a lot different than on streets.
Now that’s the Nationally. Locally, we figured we’d give the casual autocrosser a place to play were they won’t get beat up by guys on r comps, so hopefully uping the fun factor.
They are not going to add 9 classes out of the blue. It would dilute competition too much.
That’s true. That said…
Autocross is the little brother of SCCA motorsports. The emphasis should be on encouraging people to move to the higher-profit, higher-profile motorsports.
I don’t know, I’m just kind of irritated that someone with an interest and a car can’t just go to an event (even a National event), and be competitive in a STOCK class without having to spend $2k+ yearly on brakes, tires, and maintenance to keep their car in tip-top shape, on top of typical car expenses. I think the stock classes should exist to cater to those amateur, hobbyists, not to the national-level, sponsored people with the time and money to pour in $10k yearly and tens or hundreds of hours tuning it to the letter of the rules.
I’m also bitter that my car is classed the same as the R56 MCS which is basically better in every way.
You guys lost me, is STX still a class?
yes
Well, you might be able to if your name was Daddio or Strano…
The local Road Tire class has good and bad points. I’m glad WNY is running it if for no other reason than it makes it consistent with FLR, for when we do OOR events. It is a fun class to run in because there is always a bunch of people in the class. On the other hand it can pull away from other classes. I always thought that it might be better if the Road Tire class was left for people that were transitioning out of Novice that weren’t quite ready to compete, but there’s no fair way to legistate that.

Yeah, sorry for any confusion. But no classes were deleted.
The Road Tire class is for those that have cars in Stocks, Street Prepared, Prepared, and Street Mod that don’t want to run in open class on R Comp tires. They now have the option to run in one combined index class if the are on tires that have a treadwear rating of 140 or higher.
I think in an economically depressed region like WNY this is great
It is the reason I always ran in STU instead of AS despite my car being stock (well, used to be). No way could I compete with 245 width streets compared to 275+ slicks…
Well, SM2 doesn’t exist anymore.
Yeah, it’s SSM now. Just like STS is now ST, yadda yadda yadda…
No classes were deleted, just the names changed to protect the innocent.
