Who would you consider a Doctor?

My father in law hates it when I call him Doctor, I do it in public all the time.

He’s a retired historian.

best. kind. ever.

having a phd or any other certificate does not command respect.

I hate it when customers call me and emphasize their name as “dr” smith. I definitely say mr/ms smith.

I don’t even want to begin to go in what’s wrong with this. You obviously have no idea what it takes to be a PhD. It’s not just a certificate. To do anything scientific-research related, you pretty much need a PhD. Basically all of our scientific knowledge has been discovered by PhD’s and yet they get this kind of attitude from most people. It usually takes 5-6 years of grueling graduate school (think classes, meetings, presentations, etc, plus working 40+ hours/week for near minimum wage for 5-6 years AFTER you’ve got your bachelors) to get the degree (compare that to other doctors), and then another 4-6 years of post-doctoral “training” working at crappy wages until you can get a real job (meaning decent pay). I know post-docs at UB that earn a lousy 35k/yr. That sucks pretty bad for someone with 10+ years of college trying to work on curing cancer. The least you can do is show them a little respect.

Word.

Chances are people who say earning a PhD doesn’t make you a doctor probably didn’t graduate college.

People who suck at it are generally biased against education and those who pursued it.

Ugh… Chiropractors are not doctors. Theyre scam artists.

Stick with Homer’s Spine O Cylinder.

I’m surprised that more people don’t consider a dentist a doctor.

I would say they all are. Vet is a maybe, but when you think they have to figure things out without the help of the animal, I would figure that is hard.

Anyone with a doctorate is a doctor. Whether they prefer to be called a doctor or not is personal preference.

All of those(and more) are doctors, I wouldn’t prefix their names with "Dr."though in formal writing though, unless they are medicine related - JDs ScDs and PhDs get a postfix or a title (Dean, Professor, Judge) instead.

One more good thing about engineering Ph D’s is that they can get most of their education paid for while working for 20-30k/year with benefits. Thats a pretty good deal if you have the talent and desire for it.

Praxair loves to hire guys fresh out of college. Its an interesting environment. A lot of really smart people that can be pretty dumb with things outside their range of study. We also have a lot of imports from India, Europe and the UK. There are very few locals here and big name schools go a long way in getting interviews.
You can’t get anywhere in R&D here w/o one. Guys with MS degrees get shit on.

They still all have bosses at some level with MBA’s though :P. Dr. Subordinate, I presume?

That sounds about right. Could explain most of the decision making processes

Dr of shoe making?

So because they “xxx” means that they get preferential treatment? c’mon. It’s people who think they are better than everyone because they have a 3 mil house and a doctorate that I am referring to. It doesnt give anyone the right to be a self righteous prick.

I think was a physician in German army…

I’d feel inferior to just about everybody if I drove a canary yellow Grand Am AND I’m a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering. Some things just can’t be overcome with a fancy title…
