Who's An Installer?

Anyone do security/remote start installs?

I have a vehicle coming up that I need some advice on.

best buy would be your best bet :banana

i have a friend thats an installer at best buy as well as custom auto radio in latham… he likes doing sidework as well… i could have him give you a call if you wanted.

Every time I go to best buy in the mall, theres a chineese guy…he knows his shit thats for sure :nod

I don’t need someone to do an install. I needed some advice on an install I may have to do on a new vehicle at work.

If anyone’s done keyless & aftermarket actuator install in a 2007-2008 Jeep Patriot, let me know.

BTW, Best Buy couldn’t do it. We took it there first, and they pulled a door panel off and decided that it wasn’t something they were capable of doing.

Funny, because when I installed at that particular Best Buy, there wasn’t a whole hell of a lot we couldn’t do… Oh well. I’ll take some extra money for an install. :stuck_out_tongue:

ok ill say WHY you cant do an aftermarket setup in the patriot as im a chrysler certified asst service manager. the body control module would have to be bypassed in order for that system to function properly. if the BCM does not see the proper voltage it will go into a “safety” or lockdown mode thus disableing the car/vehicle from starting as part of the can/bus system. 99% of the new jeep/dodge/chrysler vehicles are equipped this way and ive seen my fair share of cars towed in because of shitty hack jobs trying to get garbage aftermarket electronics to work. trust me and dont attempt it.

^^^ Sounds like a load of shit to me.

There’s no reason a properly installed aftermarket keyless entry system would cause any of the issues you’ve described.

If the BCM is that sensitive to low voltage conditions, then I can only assume that people who leave their lights on have to have their vehicles towed to the dealership each time they forget to turn the switch off? Sounds like piss-poor design to me. Also sounds like a way to generate “guranteed service income” by a struggling automaker. And what’s the fix? Plug in a computer & hit the reset button?

But I digress.

I guess we’ll see what happens when I install a Viper keyless entry system (definitely not “garbage aftermarket electronics”). If the car shits the bed due to some crappy engineering, I’ll come back & say that you were right.

I’m far from a “shitty hack job”.

voltage to the body control module is a required function for the vehicle. aftermarket remote starters,if ruled as the cause to the wiring/electrical issue, are removed and charged to the customer for the labor for removal… not covered under warranty. ANY AFTERMARKET WIRING viper or whatever brand… is HACKED into the factory harness. the car was designed to operate under certain parameters. you are MODIFYING the vehicle to operate outside of those parameters. if it doesnt work, it wont be due to the factory system being junk. it will be from cheap garbage aftermarket electronics being spliced into factory wiring.

LOL. Okay Mr. Certified Assistant Service Manager. I apologize for even questioning the well-thought out engineering marvel that is the Chrysler electrical system.

It’s obviously above my level of understanding, and to be quite honest, I’m now afraid to even place the key into the ignition.

Thanks for setting me straight.

:bowdown

im trying to save you from having to buy the customer a new bcm. take knowledge from someone whos seen this shit first hand rather than asking for advice and then shooting the person down thats trying to help. If you didnt want that answer, dont ask the question.

Don’t worry about it. You’re the expert, I’m the hack. I understand how this works, and I submit to your superiority.

Thanks for your concern.

your sarcasm isnt flattering.

Travis… You took a beating on that. Give him props.

how did i take a beating… ignorance and sarcasm will have him replacing a 1200$ bcm…

I used to be a MECP installed at the Best Buy in crossgates for a couple years while I went to school for electronics. I can figure out pretty much all remote start/alarm/bypass modules if I have them in front of me. If anybody is stumped on something and needs a hand just email or AIM me or something.

:bowdown MY RADIO!!! theres no fm/am, power anttene problems. call me!!! lol

Do they use a chip type system in the key? With a RF or IR signal? Or is it just a standard key that uses a standard lock cylinder to start the engine?

its not technically a “key” its a fob type thing you put into a turnable cylinder… its sorta like a mini brain that completes the electrical circuit

Ah they are up to that level than. So it uses an IR signal I’m assuming? Powered through induction in the “lock cylinder” with a rolling code of some sort. How exactly would a aftermarket system get around that without supplying the vehicle with the required signal from the key? For what its worth I have never seen a Benz with an aftermarket starter system and thats the type of system they use. Door locks are done with RF and IR and starting the vehicle is IR.

unless its factory installed for a remote start on a new jeep/chrysler, i dont believe it can even be added… they have the “dealer installed cruise control” as a mopar accessory listed in the catalog, but it will not even function due to the ignition system tying in to the BCM… as you buy them is how they come basically.
