started when i was about 3-4 yrs old…i would walk around to peoples cars and look at the tire sizes, obv doesnt mean shit now lol but i would just always seem to look at the tire sizes and always want to look at the engine (i would have someone lift me up to just look under the hood, what was i looking for? i dont know, maybe the flinstone vitamins were tainted or something)…my parents could give 2 shits about how fast or sweet their cars were but they would always buy me car related things (hotwheels, matchbox cars, model cars, car magazines etc) and i would just read and read and read about them til i knew everything about the cars…this was at the ripe ol’ age of about 10…going back a few years (dont ask me why i remember this my parents like to remind me i was a “bright” kid, i dont know what the fuck happend) everytime i’d be out with the rents driving around i wouldnt pay attention to anything but cars passing or driving towards us, so i would be able to identify pretty much 95% of the cars on the road with just seeing the headlights/tail lights and again this was when i was still riding around on my big wheels and playin’ on the slip n slide…it just eventually got more and more involved as forums came out on the intrawebz and i became more knowledgable…i couldnt take apart a motor and put it back together again to save my life but i do know what motors were put into what cars, engine size, displacement, horsepower/torque yadda yadda yadda…pretty much useless facts on cars…i guess you’re introduced to cars from a young age and you dont lose your passion no matter how old you get…as you get older, the passion either a) grows because you have more $$$ or b) takes a back seat for da wife/kids…
burnouts.
I really don’t know where it came from. At age 2 I could ID almost any car by the emblem. I had (still have somewhere) tons of Matchbox cars, car pillows, a red Beetle pedal car, and all kinds of cool stuff. My dad picked up a hubcap for me off the road at age 5, and I started collecting those. At that age I loved old Mustangs. I was probably 13 when I saw a red Beetle convertible, and that started the VW thing. My dad bought a '69 Beetle that year and I spent a ton of time in the garage handing him tools as he rebuilt the engine. (His first car was a '66 Beetle and he worked on them during college to make ends meet). He got bored with it and gave it to me. I’m always driving some “interesting” old POS now.
Dealing with old project cars is a lot easier since I bought a boring reliable old Honda that I don’t have to wrench on.
For me, just being around it all my life…dad being a mechanic and always having cool cars himself etc…i remember having a massive hotwheels collection, to sitting on the curb playing “i call it” with my friends when a sweet car would drive by. ahh, those were the days…I guess its just in my blood.
ha, women are no different
duh everytime to pull somebody at the light your dick gets bigger!
Nah it was probly smokey and the bandit that first started me off! Always loved car movies/burnouts/racing/wrecks! its just a fun all around lifestyle and some good people involved in it too!
just to add…and this is gonna sound really crazy coming from me, but being into cars has taught me (and is still teaching me) how to manage money. have to learn to budget money for car payments, save for parts and whatnot, realize how bad interest fucks you over when you realize that you’re paying for a car twice by the time its paid off lol
I wish my dad had any mechanical knowledge. I dont know much but what I do know has all been self tought and researched. Its hard doing shit when you cant find a decent tool to save your life growing up with your parents garage as your only resource. I tried and failed at numerous go-kart projects but that helped me establish a foundation on how internal combustion works and auto mechanical related things work.
I always had an interest in cars but I hate to say as a 14 yo guy, The Fast and The Furious did me in. That and Gone in 60 Seconds really made me want to be around “fast cars” and unfortunately reflected on some of the decisions I made regarding autos.
One thing I find is that a lot of people who spluged in the money pit of Paintball eventually made the jump into cars. I guess having an understanding pneumatics also helps when it comes to knowing how a lot of things on cars work.
Also forgot to add my old man is an autoglass installer and has been for 23 yrs. His boss had the old 97 rock drag car at lancaster. My father made all of the awards for the “Rally in the Alley” ( you know the little glass awards they handed out? he hand made all of them)So i was around cars alot as a kid and see the dragsters was always awesome.
Because I’m asian.
jk
maybe not
I am into Cop cars (Police package vehicles).I have been driving/owning them for the last 12 years.Nothing else interests me…
Ever since I could pick up toy cars and stuff as a kid there was a fascination. Always used to read all sorts of car magazines as a kid and books that had to do with cars.
Also always used to hear stories about my dads 69 chevelle ss with the 396, and my uncle has had something like over 20 british sports cars so I always talked about them with him.
Then an older friend that lived next door bought a 1G AWD DSM when he was in high school and eventually started doing trackdays with it at the glen and mosport etc when he was in college, ever since then I’ve wanted to get into that stuff. He also bought a bike around the same time which didn’t help at all on that front either, I’ve wanted one ever since pretty much.
