just checked the spark again, it definitely is not sparking as much as it should be. Now what i need to do is find out what it could be. Can u help me out and let me swap ur coil and see if it helps? it would only take a few minutes, if u have time this evening or this weekend it would be great, thanks.
Im definitely not ruling anything out at this point, but i think it electrical now. Once i figure out whether or not everything in the ignition is good i will check that.
I don’t mean to sound cocky or rude, but I am a professional auto tech and I’m damn good at what I do. Anyone who knows me will vouch for that. That being said, when you put in just the fuel pump the car ran; correct? The original problem before all this was an extended crank after sitting for a while; correct? When we scanned the car we watched the fuel pressure drop at an accelerated rate. The original problem was fuel related. I said the most likely culprit was the sending unit. I explained why, but I’ll refresh you: first it is a returnless system, whuch eliminates a pressure regulator; second the car was never flooded with fuel according to the info you gave me which eliminates an injector. When the car was here it ran well and had no extended crank. That was because it didn’t sit here very long. Now you put in the fuel sending unit, and the car won’t start, but ran before you put it in. The problem is more than likely fuel related. There could be a couple of cause for this. Either the PCM is not firing up the fuel pump: but you say the exhaust smells of fuel. Do you here the pump run when you crank the car over? You think you may have weak spark or mistimed spark, well a culprit for that would be a bad crank sensor. That could also cause the PCM to not trigger the fuel pump module which controls the fuel pump through varying the voltage to the pump. Maybe the new sending unit you put in is bad, maybe the module is bad, maybe the fuel pressure sender is showing a higher pressure than what is really there causing the Module to limit the voltage to the fuel pump. It’s a relatively simple system and easy to diagnose with the right diagnostic equipment ie: a scan tool w/ data display. There are a multitude of possibilities and basically anything anyone tells you w/o actually seeing the car and getting some real data is all conjecture. You still have my # so give me a call. I’m happy to help out a board member when I can but, I have some big jobs over here that are taking up alot of my time and I just got back into school (I haven’t been to school since '94 so it takes some getting used to). Hey man, i really appreciate all the help i can get with this. If you could swing by this week and help me out with the car it would be awesome cause im really stuck. The pump that i got is definitely working. The reason why i say this is that before the new sending unit, i could take the fuel line off of the fuel filter and there was not pressure at all, when i took the hose off, whatever was in the hose would just run out. Now when i take off the hose after cranking the starter, i get gasoline spraying out everywhere as i pull it off. I can also DEFINITELY hear it pumping every time i crank it. Also i should mention that I CAN get the car to start, it just takes a really long time for it to kick over. Its gone from extended cranking, to starting when ur lucky. Ill give you a call monday evening and maybe we can do sumn monday or tuesday to get to the bottom of this. Thanks again

car has been starting more easily then it was right after i replaced the sending unit. i brought it to the shop, heres what happened. I go outside to start it to bring it down there. Doesnt start for shit, cranked it so many times that i had to jump it off the xterra, finally kicks over after cranking for like 10 seconds on the xterra jump. Get it down there yesterday evening. They looked at it this morning. Started fine everytime they started it, i stopped by around 11 to see the progress, they say its been starting fine, they give it a shot while im there, and it takes 2 tries to get it started but then kicks right over. They kept looking at it the rest of the afternoon but had no luck with it. I just went to pick it up, it started fine. Im pissed. My girlfriend has taken this thing to shops almost a year ago for this problem and the same thing would happen, it would start fine for them when she got it there. I am at whitts end with this car. I hope that it blows up one day and ends this all.
