yeah, that was quite possibly the worst 2 hours of my life. HORRIBLE film. Shitty writing, shittier acting, shitty camera work (intentional or not, it was shit) and even the effects weren’t anything to write home about. Not to mention, shitty way to reveal THE END OF THE MOVIE at the fucking beginning. I’m all for dramatic irony where the audience knows and characters don’t, but it wasn’t worth wasting 2 hours to watch “how it plays out” when it was THAT BAD.
over the top on too many things, the shaky-camera was just miserable, I couldn’t believe or buy into it (zero suspension of disbelief) and was GLAD each time someone you were supposed to “care about” died.
I give it a -20 on a scale of 1-10.
One reviewer put it perfectly:
But for all its mystery, the monster is mostly an excuse for the film’s more ambitious experiment: creating characters out of moment-by-moment action, rather than compelling emotion. As they’re thrown almost immediately into chaos, none of them are particularly well-drawn or even sympathetic. Instead, they’re emotional sketches of fear and uncertainty rather than individuals with backgrounds and futures.
FUCK THIS MOVIE. Its sucked balls. It may have been good if it wasn’t for the retarded Blair Witch Project camera idea, and the lack of an ending. I’m pissed, what a waste of money.
yeah, another review that sums up my frustration with the lack of pay-off / SHIT ending:
…directors think they can throw some digital magic and viral marketing together to attract attention. Well, let Cloverfield be an example: it fails miserably. The film is left open-ended, with absolutely no explanation as to why any of the “plot” happened in the first place. Almost everything that takes place in the movie seems utterly random and disconnected. The filming gimmick (making the movie look like it was done on a home DV camera) shook the screen so much that it left many people I saw this with dizzy. It was very hard to follow - and I got tired of seeing split-second glimpses of everything. You never get a good look at anything interesting in the movie at all.
i thought it was great. its not supposed to be a movie with a plot and an ending, its supposed to seem like an actual recording of the happenings. if tthat was really happening, im pretty sure id be running around scared as hell as well. but the hell with rescuing a chick in a building thats falling over.
did anyone else who saw it notice anything about the very last scene, the shot of the beach? or was i the only one that saw it?
:word: i enjoyed it, very different approach, too many monster movies are predictable, this one had me wondering whats next, the fact that it wasnt based on a monster but instead the people in a life catastrophy was  And the thing i was most worried about, when you first see the monster i feared it would ruin the whole thing which it didn’t, they showed just as much as anyone would probably see if they were in the situation with their city being destroyed, the story stayed with the people in panic. This movie gets 7.5/10 from me.
Mike
kenkyd: umm i did see the scene but i cant say anything stuck out? what did i miss, PM me so we dont ruin it for those who havnt seen it yet.
actually almost everything is explained…I won’t spoil things but unless you were paying attention near the end you missed a lot…also if you didn’t stay after the credits you missed a little something-something…again I won’t say what as to not spoil…
hrmmm that make me think can this version of vB support [spoiler] tags to hide text unless clicked?
whoever disses the movie completely is close minded. and stupid.
sure it had its faults, but overall it was pretty good, and entertaining all the way through. shitty camera work? are you kidding me? did you miss that the point of the movie was that it was filmed on a home video camera that the one guy happened to be using? jesus… people are dumb.
go see it, it’s a little different but it’s worth it.
we left when the credits were rolling, crap! i’m pissed i missed this little stuff, i’m going to see it again tonight just to catch the end stuff i missed. j/k
I srsly hate you… I waited for after the credits… and THEY ARE LONG!!!
I thought the movie was pretty good, I liked the whole concept of it, I just really hate leaving movies in complete question of whats happening next. Lets hope the DVD extras will fill in the blanks.
8/10 - but I will never watch it again cause of the ending.
I was very impressed with the foreshadowing that the movie had, It made it predictable but at the same time it didn’t give you the “WHY THE FUCK IS THAT THERE” Feeling. The Camera work and video editing was AWESOME. The angles were great! and I can only imagine how hard its gotta be to do video editing on that movie…
just saw it and it was decent. i was not a big fan of the whole home video thing as it started to piss me off in the first 5 minuets of the movie cuttin in and out like that. but there were some parts where it really worked. i have never gotten motion sickness but this movie really mad me nauseous. plus the part where they take the girl away when she was bitten didnt help either, that was sick.
if they do make a sequel i hope they do it with normal non-POV way i think i would have liked it better that way
and OfficeK i also hate you for making me stay till the end to see what happened it was not worth it at all.
i also saw newman there with a lady friend
SPOILER
for anyone who does not want to stay to find out what it was do not highlight below this.
at the very end there was a faint voice from the guy that was going to china saying “what now?”
