$3000 drag car?

well, my project went from dropping an rb20, to turboing the KA in the '93 hatch i picked up. i’m hoping to have around 200-250 hp, and i’m trying to do this on an astronomically small budget, $3000, in this will be everything including the modified KA, and the car bought, and safetied, i only paid 500 for the car as a guy i know needed some money, so i’m already down to 2500 i can spend on the turbo, and other go-fast goodies, not to mention some KYB AGX shocks, here’s the cost break-down:

what i expect…what i did
to pay…part name…pay

120-…turbo manifold…-175
400-…Greddy E-manage…-320
1000-…turbo…-250
300-…FMIC…-350
120-…downpipe…-105
400-…370cc injectors…-150
300-…apexi SAFC-II
450-…cat-back exhaust…-350
75-…3" test pipe(bings)
-…Maximum Boost by Corky Bell…-35
…-…turbo oil/coolant line kit…-130

…cost of buying car…500
…certification cost of car…640

$3165…TOTAL…$3005

so, considering i’ve already managed to save $1000 getting a used turbo and injectors, i dont think this project is very far fetched, only thing that’s scaring me right now, is if i’ll need brakes, only thing i dont have on my parts car. other than that, i think it’s a very feasible project, no?

whats the mileage on the ka

oops, sorry, around 200K it’s kinda high, but if it pops, i’ll just go grab another one for a few hundred

Nice project man, i was planning on going the same route when I (eventually) pick up a 240.

  • But remember, you get what you pay for…you’re buying all these used parts…might be more of a headache.
  • For brakes, dont ppl upgrade them to the z32 ones? easy fix
  • If you can, and plan to already try and do most of the work yourself.

All-in-all, good luck and I’m looking forward to see what you come up with.

i would just get another ka with like maximum of 150k and then do it…better safe then sorry
btw sounds like a good project good luck man

Dont the greddy emanage and the safc II basically do the same thing?
I thought they both overall are your air/fuel aspect?

yeah, i know that usually you get what you pay for, but sometimesd a calculated risk is needed, plus, the turbo and injectors were from varun, and he was highly reccomended for having good engines, so i figured i’d take the risk. and the e-manage is a piggy back computer management system, lets you program in bigger injectors, different MAF sensors, lose the speed cut, while the APEXI unit does the air/fuel aspect of it. i’m pretty sure anyways, i’m new to this turboing and engine management game, which is why i’m not putting in a fresher engine, i’m almost counting on popping this one learning how to properly tune it in.(something i’ve always wanted to learn how to do)

I have a frontmount for you for cheap. It’s a pretty nice one too, I think precision or something like that. I’ll take a pic when I get home.

go on kijiji.ca and search apexi. theres an safcII going for $150

yeah, i’d be interested in the intercooler depending on the sizing and all that, pm me the info, and as for the apexi unit, i think i’m goin’ with the neo one, although that is a sweet deal for one, maybe i’ll end up going with that…

well, i got the car safetied, and on the road, got in my exhaust, intercooler, manifold, and some other goodies, huge thanks to Keith from HMR Performance, awesome prices, and good looking parts, plus the shipping and everything went very smoothly, easy guy to get along with. well, guess all i need now is the ECU management, i might just get a ROM burning tool and create my own maps, not 100% sure on it yet though. well, looks like i might be able to pull this build off! we have some drag races up here on the 14th, prolly put my car in it in stock trim, and see what the turbo really does for it.

Congrats. Where is “up here”?

up in kirkland lake, i’m also trying to attend the drags in elliot lake as well this summer, and possibly the ones in north bay.

You live in Kirkland? shit that place is far!!! I drove there for work I made it in 8 hours in a astro van during winter, I was scared like hell driving up there in the night.

i think it willl run a bit higher then u think doing stuff like that always leads to little things needed that add up quick and some runs to nissan plus if u want it done right u should get a lower km motor or rebuild it for turbo i hear ka-t is sick tho, good luck with it

I’m in Sault Ste. Marie, maybe I’ll see you at the Elliot Lake drags this year. I’m hoping to make it out, whether I run or not is dependent on my 2nd gear synchros…

They have drags in north bay?!?! Really! When/where?

Once the corn/wheat is harvested they cut it down and make it a strip. Black cow is the start line and the white cow is exactly 1/4 mile down.

oh, i know i’m still forgetting stuff, i’ve ordered in a boost guage, and a filter adapter, but i still need the boost controller, 3" test pipe, and other small things that i dont know about yet. and i’m planning on picking up another KA to rebuild, i just wanna get the formula right with this one first. does anyone know what the chip number is for the chip in our ECU? i’m thinking of learning to program chips rather than the e-manage…

For a cheap/fast drag car… lol… you coulda gotten an old crx/civic late 80s/early 90s, swap an h22 a few home made boltons and stripped/gutted car haha… it would be a killer lil thing  Plus good milage. You could even fab a turbo h22 out of it oh man… it would be pretty sweet.
