any runners?

:word: I can walk forever, so thats not a problem. its just boreing. I can walk 10 miles and not be tired. But jogging wears me out. ill just start power walkin 30 min every morning.

Power walking is easier on the joints, but you have to get your heart rate up. Jogging is better for that.

I run 3 nights a week. But not in the southtowns. You’re welcome to join.

my feet hurt when i run on a treadmill, i need to run on the elliptical…

i think its my sneakers. finishline.com has a cool tool that tells you what running shoe to get based on your wet “foot print” after you walk on a paper towel…

anyone else have this issue?

Best thing to run on with zero impact is not the elliptical… It’s this … machine - i can’t remember right now for some strange reason… shit.

Anyway - if you don’t like running, and think you can “walk forever”, do what I did.

Get on a tread mill that you can adjust the incline.

Start at like 10 degrees… for the first minute, walk around 3.5 MPH. Then bring the incline up to 1 degree every minute for the first 5 minutes.

Then bring it up to 3 degrees every 5 minutes.

Do it for about 20 minutes.

Then bring it back to 10 degrees incline, walk for like 2 minutes, and then go back up.

The only catch : you have to walk. Don’t jog. And KEEP YOUR ARMS MOVING/PUMPING

That is the most imporant thing - keeping your heart pumping with the arms.

What kind of shoe are you using? Shoes regardless of brand usually come in Supportive or Cushion

I need a supportive shoe because I have high arches and tend to pronate which causes ankle and tendon problems.

They say the best thing is to run barefoot. There is some tribe of people in Africa who do all their running without shoes and runners have learned a lot about the natural structure of the foot and its mechanisms. I need a supportive shoe, but to listen to what researchers say about this tribe, it would seem that I now have a dependency in my foot on the support of the shoes. The theory is that moderns shoes prohibit natural foot movement.

Nike has some line of shoe now that is virtually supportless and weightless. Its more or less a second skin for your bare feet. Tough to use outdoors but on a treadmill they would be great.

You’re talking about the Tarahumara tribe in Mexico. Men’s Health had a big article on them about two issues back. Interesting read. The article included an American ultramarathon runner who went to live with them. Aside from ditching a lot of pain, running barefoot strengthened his foot muscles so much they pulled up his arches and he lost two shoe sizes.

Hahaha and of course the Indian tribe has a website: http://www.tarahumara.com.mx/

not reading whole thread…

I like eliptical machines

that + south beach = carl - 30lbs…

60 more to go.

Its scary that my goal is 220lbs… im a big dude

whoaaaaaa

that’s a lot of cinnabon broseph

way to go tho… just got back from running after doing legs & shoulders. man i love running, i feel like meth’d up lumberjack sex :tuppy:

Question about increasing workout.

I’ve been running for 40 minutes for a few weeks now, recently I started doing the “interval program” The first time i ran it it kicked the shit out of me, i just got back from doing it now, and i feel like i could go out and run another 4 miles… I can’t really increase my time, because i am already pushing it to run 40 minutes on my lunch break, change and shower.

So would it be advantageous to increase the elevation of the intervals or the speed at which i run them? The elevation seems to have the biggest impact on the “holy god this is tiring” factor… but i am really unsure…

bump up the intensity
speed and incline

edit:

use perceived intensity on a scale of 1-10

what might be a 5 to you right now may be a 20 for rubicant… and in 2 weeks will be a 3 for you and a 26 for him.

get a heart rate monitor. we have cheap ones for sub 50 beans. it will let you know how hard you’re working. we also have some where you can program you heart rate zones, and your work outs into it. it will let you know where you hr is and where it needs to be.

word, i’ll have to pick one of those up…

also, since i’ve been running uphill, my “bad knee” starts to hurt in the last 5 minutes… any suggestions? ice or ibuprophen (sic) after?

EDIT: also, what’s up with the sodium buisness? i need to eat less salt now? goddamnit, my food is going to be even more restricted…

if you’re doing long runs the sodium may actually be good. it will help you retain water, and that will keep your joints lubed up and help with dehydration.

you should be taking glucosamine for your knee… stick with aleve for now

ok. so after a multiweek hiatus, stemming from sickness and spiraling into laziness, i am back in the gym. However, i must have gotten fatter, even though i lost weight… see, on my 5 mile run today, i noticed some chafing on my balls and legs. WTF. I’m wearing the same shit i always did. what can i do to stop this… talc? spandex?

that sounds hot. i googled chafing. http://www.thewalkingsite.com/blisters.html

if u had skin like a man, it wouldnt chafe as easily??
but im impressed, 5 miles is a good run. i could run… about 1/2 mile. lol

i need to start running with u, im startin to pack on a few lb’s

haha!!! yeah. i’m gonna buy a real mans car and just let it idle. I’ll put in a real lumpy cam so it vibrates real good. That’ll toughen up any man’s skin. :stuck_out_tongue:

freshman 15!!!

I don’t know what you are wearing to run, but if you wear some kind of tight underarmor pants or shorts (under normal clothing) or something along those lines you shouldn’t chafe as much.

I’m wearing surf trunks with no liner and no boxers. freeball FTL i guess.
