"Did Racers Kill GTA Couple?
RICHMOND HILL – Katie Manchester, 7, woke up yesterday to the sight of police officers coming to tell her the horrible news that her parents had been killed by suspected street racers and wouldn’t be coming home.
“This little girl, thanks to these idiots, looked out the neighbour’s window and saw nothing but police cars,” family friend Kevin McKeage said. “These guys should be spending the rest of their lives behind bars.”
Rob Manchester, 46, and wife Lisa, 43, had just left their daughter with the neighbours and were on their way to celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary Saturday night around 10 p.m.
They were barely 2 km from their home at Yonge St. and Stouffville Rd. when their Hyundai Accent was broadsided by one of two Hondas that police estimated were travelling about 150 km/h.
“It’s a huge, big, badass shock to everyone,” Vicki McKeage said. "They’re real nice people. No one would ever say a bad word about them.
“They’re real nice parents. Her dad was with that little girl every single day.”
Vicki said she’s known Lisa for 20 years, since the two were college students together.
Rob was a postal worker and Lisa worked for a construction company, she said.
Their daughter is being cared for by relatives, who are too upset to speak, Vicki said.
Their deaths come just two days after the federal government announced plans to make street racing a Criminal Code offence.
Street racing is currently dealt with under provision of the Highway Traffic Act in Ontario.
Nevertheless, the 18-year-old driver of the car which avoided the crash is charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
The 21-year-old who crashed into the victims’ car suffered hip and leg injuries. He’s in Sunnybrook hospital and charges are expected after his condition improves.
York traffic Sgt. Dave Mitchell said the Manchesters were turning left on to eastbound Stouffville Rd. from Yonge St., when two northbound cars, a Honda Civic and a Honda Del Sol, approached the intersection travelling along side each other at almost twice the 80 km/h speed limit.
SPEED A FACTOR
While York traffic investigators say speed was a factor in the deaths, they’re hesitant to say the two Hondas were racing until they speak to more witnesses.
Mitchell is now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the suspects’ vehicles south of Stouffville Rd. moments before the crash"
