Auto Insurance tips and tricks?

doing some car insurance shopping for a car I’m in the midst of purchasing every quote I’ve came up with is insane
I understand being 21 that its going to be a little high, but what I’m getting seems a bit ridiculous, or maybe its on par and I’ve just living under a rock or something
I have a clean record, zero accidents, zero tickets and all that

any suggestions as far as tips and tricks? companies to try? various discounts?

So far tried Geico, Progressive, State Farm, and 21st

Progressive has been the cheapest (935 per 6 mo) and 21st was the most expensive (2500 per 6 mo)

Insurance was 1200/6 months when i was 16 for a v8 el camino. Now 9 years later it is <600 for a e30, e46, and a 99 silverado. Full coverage adds about 100-150 per vehicle but I dont need that with what I drive

It has a lot to do with how long you have had your own insurance for along with what you stated. I was with progressive for my first 6 months, then I have been with geico ever since.

The insurance companies know that evo’s are prime for ass hattery, so the rates are high. try a quote for a old civic and see if the issue is you or the vehicle.

I’ve had progressive for my bike and cars since day one, they were always the cheapest. I recently switched to Geico for my car, and somehow my bike insurance on progressive went down…idk what that jazz was about lol.

i had the evo insured under my dads name and it cost me under 1k a year which was awesome (thats long gone though), but I’m buying a new car within the week and id like to have everything in my name

edit: it shouldn’t be me. i have a clean driving record, zero accidents, zero tickets so idk?

What kind of car?

i put a deposit down today on a 2012 golf

I pay 70 a month, full coverage on a 335… Your age doesnt help you.

Hints… “I drive my work commute, which is 1 mile” or a drive for pleasure as I have a bike that I ride most of the time

Multi policy discounts

Safe driver discounts

Good student discounts

Take the MSF for bikes its good for point reduction and 10% off too

Install an alarm, etch your windows, or lojack… etc

There was an article in maxim about this

Tip 2… fill out as many online multi-quote pages as you can and check for the cheapest quotes that way… I used to re-shop it every couple years. Started at 1200 with unitrin, then went to 800 with geico, then bought a new car and went with allstate.

Northeast casualty or something like that was my first bike coverage… it was 180 for liability only. Then Progressive was my go to for the bike when I needed real coverage.

If your insurance has been under your dads name then it’s most likely you. Riding on mommy’s and daddy’s wallet and credit does have it’s down falls. Not directed specifically towards you but I see it every day. having your own cell phone plan, insurance, credit cards, etc all some how work together in the grand scheme of things.

cut your balls off, females insurance is about 1/2 price of males

when i looked for a thread about this already i came across your statement about it in the last one
i like my balls, i think ill spend the extra $$ to keep them

Nice! To bad on those price quotes though. It really is your age and not being on your own policy until now that is shooting your premium sky high. Just keep shopping the price quotes from all the different companies.

Increase the deductibles, lower the coverage amounts (be careful though this is dangerous so don’t do either of them too much).

Get a 4 door car, as they’re much cheaper than coupes. GEICO is usually going to be your bet as the cheapest out of all the reputable insurance companies so I’m surprised at the quotes you got. You can go see a broker as long as you don’t mind having some random company from East Bumfuck insuring you.

Take the defensive driver course if you already haven’t. It’s about an 8% discount on your overall insurance.

EDIT:

Just saw that you’re probably going to get a new Golf. Insuring a new car is gonna be much more expensive than an older one because of the collision coverage you’re going to carry. If you were to seriously F up the car in an accident it will cost more to fix it than let’s say a 2004 Impala would. That’s another reason why it costs so much.

Like it’s been said, putting it in your name only is going to jump up your rate. As long as you’re living at home you might as well still keep it in your parents name so you save money and they car a multi-car discount.

USAA.

Also, moving from Brockport NY to downtown Buffalo was going to increase my yearly rate by $400. I don’t know where you live but you may want to consider using another family members address for the address your insurance co. uses. It’s as shady as it gets but for $400, I would.

i do 500 deductables for collision and comp, and 100/300 on body and liability

for this car it doesn’t make a difference, out of curiosity i priced it with a 4 door one and it only saved me like 40 bucks a month

yeah i guess. i had the evo in my fathers name which allowed me to insure it under his name. this car though is in my name because I’m financing it so i can start to build up credit so it will have to be insured in my name too

when i spoke to state farm (who my parents have) they said if i put my father on there as a co driver it would save me like a 100 a month or so because of multi car

i live in west seneca, so i would assume that wouldn’t be a problem like living in the city at all

$40/month = $480/year.

The loan can be yours, the insurance can be yours too but it would be under your parents plan. The insurance doesn’t need to be in your dad’s name to be on your parents plan.

I was with State Farm for my first car and this is exactly what I did.

try a broker for the hell of it.

I use The Southtowns Agency in EA…Donna got me a rate cheaper than geico and the coverage has proven to be awesome.

I effed up my euro bumper in a parking lot and called it in as hit and run…collision shop estimated $1200 in damage on a monday, the insurance adjuster came to my place of employment on thursday and estimated $1800 in damage and cut me a check for $1300 on the spot and said “have it fixed wherever I want have a nice day.” Single best insurance claim experience I’ve ever had. I tossed the stock bumper back on and sold the remaining trim peices and other parts from the euro front and ended up with huge profit.

sorry, i mistyped, only subtracted 40 off my 6 month, not per month

Allstate was cheaper for me than anyone. About 1/3 of the price of both Progressive and Geico
