Armchair police
All these things being true, how can you call the cops actions anything but acceptable? Think about what could have happened had they NOT caught this guy in the chase…
Police need more training on anger management and professionalism. I totally understand getting caught up in the moment and when adrenaline is pumping people do things they regret.
However, when all is said and done, they are paid to serve and protect. Not abuse and beat. Law enforcement professional.
I think many of us actually know this cop. The actions are inexcusable.
I know the female and one of the males. Again everything was fine till he was cuffed on the ground and began to hit and kick.
But your not a drug dealer are you?
its not like he is running around slapping innocent people. He lightly roughed up some drug dealing POS. it wasn’t like he curbed the guy. I’m sure this thug has been hit harder.
As far as I’m concerned, the guy gave up civil liberties as soon as he engaged in criminal activity. You want to do something you know is illegal and than run when you get caught, you should expect to get beat up a little.
There is TONS of training on professionalism. It’s probably the core focus of law enforcement. Everyone makes mistakes, which is what this guy did.

That’s still not an excuse though. As much as it would feel great to take action, you can’t. It gives the whole force a bad name, and can ruin your career and freedom. It doesn’t matter if it was a murderer, or your grandma. You can’t use excessive force without taking responsibility for it.
It’s a very fine line when it comes to treating criminals with the respect they deserve, which is very little. Once you cross that line, there’s no going back. I totally understand that this guys didn’t deserve what happened to him, but the media has made this guy out to be some sort of victim, which really irks me.
Hard to preach restraint if you’ve never been in the officer’s situation.
Exactly.
If an officer can’t restrain themselves then they should not be officer’s.
Your right and he is gonna face the music for his actions. I’m merely saying that I do not believe he should lose his career over it. Will he be punished? Absolutely. Humiliated. He already probably is. Should he be kept from the profession of how he makes his money and puts food on the table? No.
The entire point of the cop is to show restraint and enforce the law.
If you can’t control yourself and show a high level of professionalism at all times find another career

Meh im guessing this isn’t the first time this has happened.
Think about what it would take at your current job to get you fired? I’m sure its much less than hitting someone if anything police should be held to a higher level.
How many officers does it take to beat up a drug dealer…
None, he fell.
Oh yeah, no way he should/will lose his career over this. He could be charged with harassment, but that’s not a career ender.
I kinda agree. I just think they need stiffer penalties if you go over the line. Suspend them for a month without pay, and escalate it more if it happens again. When these guys basically get a paid vacation after doing whatever (in this case, beating up a guy already restrained), why would they care?
Hah, this reminds me of this fake news clip:
AUGUSTA, GA - Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta, Ga. told police he observed a customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on surveilance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket. When confronted the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door.
Outside on the sidealk were four Marines collecting toys for the Toys for Tots program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpt. Phillip Duggan, in the back; the injury did not appear to be severe.
After police and an ambulance arrived at the scene, Cpt. Duggan was taken for treatment.
“The subject was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw … injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off the curb after stabbing the Marine,” according to a police report.
Police are in a position of public trust something like this undermines that trust and could potentially put other officers at risk.
Because it may prevent him from ever becoming a sergeant…
Well I am not in a career that involves chasing people and physically taking them to the ground. Obviously if I punched someone in the face, I’d be fired. But when your job revolves around being physical at times and getting what I’m guessing is a pretty good adrenaline rush that’s when you have to fall back on training.
Which leads to, is this one officer giving the whole department a bad name, or is it the people that he first worked with when he was a rookie not doing their part. Someone somewhere dropped the ball.
